Default Biochar at Ballina

Seems like a good and generalisable* idea?

" Ballina Council to build a biochar plant

By Miranda Saunders

Thursday, 07/06/2012

A northern NSW Council will be the first in Australia to build a biochar processing plant.

Ballina Council has received $4.3 million from the Federal Government to help fund its $8.5 million project.

The biochar processing facility will not only make the carbon-sequestering fertiliser, but also generate electricity.

Council manager of waste services Rod Dawson says with much of the national research being undertaken in the region by NSW Department of Primary Industries, there's a high demand for biochar.

"They're currently taking about 400 tonnes a year and paying significant dollars to import them," he said.

"So we've got a ready made market on our doorstep.

"We also have high value acreages around here that are growing crops like coffee and macadamias, small properties growing large quality crops.

"They could take this product as well." "

It does sound promising.
I'd love to know more about the economics, presuming it is a good thing in principle though?
