Do you know the old Russian Jewish joke on this?
Bolsheviks go to a Chaim's house to get valuables as they been told that he has gold. Bolsheviks: - Chaim, we've been told you are hiding gold in your house! Chaim: - Yes, all 200pounds of it! Sarah, My Gold, they finally came for you! Oren's "Six Days" research is really top notch. His other book on the "Middle East and America" is a bit pathetic - full of stereotypes and reads more like a "bathroom reader" with the likes of "Did you know that...." (Oren trying to be Fromkin but it's not working out). Though he does sound like a good choice. |

As always, The sound and the fury are more important. Oren's value is in being able to clearly articulate in unaccented English what Israel's issues are. For too long Israeli foreign policy has been dominated by old men and women who curry political favor but can barely communicate. Even Peres, who can speak English fairly well should have worked with a speech coach decades ago. Many of the Arab leaders have done this or at least have learned English in England.

Oren seems very promising so far. It's always a huge improvement when Israel has spokepeople who can speak English well and look American.
Sallai Meridor was terrible, and it's beyond me how he managed to rise through he ranks all these years. No doubt political nepotism. While we're on this topic, it would be good if they replaced Gabriela Shalev at the UN, too. Now Israel should focus on sending some good spokespeople to Europe. |

Gillerman was top notch and his accent was not detrimental in any way. I don't think accents are necessarily the problem, it's the degree of the accent that can be a problem. Salai Meridor's accent was unbearable. Livni's is atrocious. |
