If there had been a solid, well-patrolled fence along the border... or if the Minutemen had been on patrol... this guy would still be alive today.
BTW, Pine Valley is about **20** miles from the Mexican border, not 60 as the story claim; and is about 50 miles east of San Diego. --------------------------------- http://www.thedesertsun.com/apps/pbc...603120350/1024 Lost Mexican national dies in snow The Associated Press March 12, 2006 ALPINE - A group of illegal immigrants got lost in freezing, snowy country in eastern San Diego County and one died before six others were rescued Saturday, the Border Patrol said. The Mexican nationals, all men, became disoriented near Corte Madera in Pine Valley, a high-elevation rural area east of San Diego, Border Patrol spokesman Richard Kite said. A storm had dumped 8 inches to 1½ feet of snow on the ground, he said. One of the men either had a cell phone or used a roadway call box to contact the California Highway Patrol about 7:30 a.m., Kite said. The CHP contacted the Border Patrol to say there were "people in distress in the snow," and agents trained in back-country rescue hunted about three hours before finding the group, Kite said. One man, whose identity was not immediately known, was pronounced dead at the scene. The others were treated at the scene, possibly for mild hypothermia, but none of their conditions were life-threatening, Kite said. He did not know whether the men were dressed for the weather and said they would be interviewed to determine the circumstances. Pine Valley is about 60 miles from the Mexican border. "You have people who left from Tijuana in the morning" and may not have known about the snowfall, he said. "It's not the first time that people have tried to make it through up there under those conditions," he said. "A lot of times, smugglers will tell these guys, 'It's gonna be a half-hour walk. Don't worry about it.'" Sometimes "they're simply not dressed for the elements and they become separated." |

That's so sad You have to wonder what life in Mexico is like, that its own citizens are willing to risk their lives to get out and get to the U.S. The only way this huge tide of illegal immigration will end, is if things in Mexico improve enough that the citizens no longer want to leave. I wonder what the chances are... and why. |

The Mexican government is corrupt at all levels. If you open up a factory, you will be forced to pay protection money from either the local crooks or the local police- whoever has the upper hand at the time. What entrepreneur would risk anything in that environment. As a result, there are no jobs. |

I agree Little Acorn. One of the things we need to do to fix the illegal immigration problem is to help Mexico be a country with good jobs for the people so they don't have to rick their lives coming here illegally. All they are trying to do is provide for their families.
Rent the Movie - Maria Full of Grace - to get an idea of what it's like. |
