I don't know which side to take?

Look at who attacked who first. Clearly the McD worker overreacted, but the disgruntled customer hit him, both customers taunted him and then they jumped on the counter and went for him.

The additional blows after the attackers are down does take it way beyond self defense. But he didn't start the physical part of it.
