Default Ted Kennedy backed segregation?
http://opinionjournal.com

From "Best of the Web", by James Taranto

Ted Kennedy Backed Segregation
http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=510887

Today's Harvard Crimson has an interesting historical footnote about Ted Kennedy:

*** QUOTE ***

During his days as a student at Harvard, the youngest brother in the Kennedy clan garnered just one mention in The Crimson--a 1956 article
http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=156690 about an inter-house debating event, according to an archive search.

The question at the debate was: "Resolved: That the Federal Government should compel the state of Alabama to grant equal educational opportunities to Negroes." Kennedy's Winthrop team took the negative side and won.

*** END QUOTE ***

That's right, Kennedy argued for segregation! Now of course a college debate is an intellectual exercise; people don't always agree with the positions they advocate. But if this were a Republican judicial nominee, is there any doubt that Kennedy would consider it disqualifying?

I don't think so. I've argued many positions I don't agree with just for the sake of debate. To think that one would hold Teddy liable for a college debate is ridiculous (especially such a great leader as him).

I know this is one of those examples. The guy is a raving, drunken, lunatic murderer. He should still be in the graybar hotel.

Well, Teddy had no problem making Sam Alito liable for the actions of an organization he once belonged to, yet actions which had nothing to do with him directly.

Aren't you given a topic and a side in a curriculum debate? I always thought you had no choice and that was how they measured your debating ability.

Lots more dirt on Kennedy that is lots more obvious to need this little tidbit of nothing.

Very true!

It was a debate.

...and that pales in comparison to the "real" Ted Kennedy.
