At least someone is moving to Upstate New York...

I found a great quote in today's article in The New York Times about the flight of young adults from Upstate New York:

"Population growth upstate might have lagged even more but for the influx of 21,000 prison inmates, who accounted for 30 percent of new residents. During the first half of the current decade, the pace of depopulation actually increased in many places."

Ha, I am one of them. From Albany, now in Boston for music school, and after that it's definitely not back to Albany! Most likely NYC, perhaps Austin or Nashville.

I dread a move to LA.

Upstate's time will come... just wait until climate change kicks in.

erroxiainsona 06-13-2006 07:25 PM

Even that ^ won't help Albany http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.png

Ephejvll 06-13-2006 07:35 PM

No, but it will help all those inland waterfront communitites that are hurricane-proof.

It would help if the New York State taxes went down as well as many other costs of doing business in New York.

Hey, why'd you pull my comment regarding inmates moving to upstate NY being an influx of Kirsten Gillibrand voters? Can you people not take a joke!?

Fact: Kirsten Gillbrand was Special Counsel to HUD Secretary Cuomo during the infamous "flipping scandals" escapade!

Some of the stuff I've seen on this board,....and you pull my comments!?

I the reason for this is that Cuomo has not done anything interesting in his life and his only claim to fame is that he has a famous daddy (kind of like GW Bush). I guess your comment was removed because of guilt by association http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.png

I'm seriously thinking about going Upstate. There's good bargains to be had and besides, what is new will be old and what is old will be new again. That's how life is. Right now, Upstate is not very popular but you know how life works, one day people will flock back and I'll be sitting pretty.http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/biggrin.png

What the hell has Andrew Cuomo done since his HUD days?

Though I get (and love) your comment about my post being removed because of guilt by association, Kirsten Gillibrand (guess I gotta be careful how I word this, or it will get yanked again!) seems like she's the one who's guilty by her association with do-nothing former HUD Honcho Cuomo! Again, all I really said was that she was Special Counsel to Cuomo at HUD during the Clinton-era "flipping" scandals! Ooops! There I go againhttp://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.png !

..which means leave me far away from it.

Interesting comments about Gillibrand for Congress. I follow politics pretty closely, but really haven't heard much about her. I certainly didn't know Kirsten Gillibrand was Andy Cuomo's lackey at HUD, though I do remember the money-drain and flipping BS that was going on while Cuomo was Secretary. Well, a Kirsten Gillibrand victory would be yet another reason to stay away from upstate.

There's plenty of nice, quiet places upstate (I'm particularly fond of Ithaca), so if you want a quiet life, it's a cheapo place to do it. The NYC real estate bubble is growing though - prices have started to rise even in Binghamton... keep us posted on your very patient flipping.

Antinimby, if eventually selling your property for a solid profit is a big concern, then seriously look into stuff in the Hudson Valley, particularly older properties in the upper section nearing Albany, like in Columbia or Greene counties. Manhattanites have already eaten up a lot of the higher end stock to use as country houses, but there's still lots of bargains to be found. And with the inevitable expansion of NYC's metro, this region is naturally next in line to see prices rise. It's already happened to an extent.

That it has. I just got back from a few days at a friend's house in Troy (lives in BPC, but spends the weekends there) All he was talking about is how the prices are going up and that more and more "City" people keep showing up.

Also he mentioned some sort of High speed train to White plains or something, but he was sketch on the details, any info?

As for Ithaca --- stay away...far away... I spent 4 very cloudy, windy, boring years there.

Thanks guys, for your advices.
Having never been Upstate, I'm thinking of taking a roadtrip later this year by the way of the NYS Thruway and stopping in each city/town I pass through to see for myself.

Ughhh....don't remind me. Take the worst that Rural America has to offer and the worst that Long Island has to offer and that sums up that place in a nut shell. My parents got suckered by the campus...I wanted to go to Columbia and be cool....
Last time I checked, Cornel has been one of the best universities in the country. In many fields, it's in top ten.

Read this - sounds much better than what you described (you surely should have a lot of career options with Cornell on your resume):

I imagine Ithaca would be the worst possible place to go if you wanted Columbia. I like visiting the hippie lesbian vibe.
