Manhattan Family Killed In Apartment Fire

A fire ripped through a Manhattan apartment this morning, killing a couple and three of their children.

Flames broke out just after 6:30 a.m. in a sixth floor apartment at the Robert Fulton Houses on 18th Street and Ninth Avenue.

A seven-year-old, a three-year-old and a 15-month-old were killed, along with their parents.

The fire department said the victims all died of smoke inhalation after the fire started in the kitchen and spread to the living room.

A 10-year-old boy was taken to the hospital and is said to be clinging to life.

"We were able to successfully resuscitate the 40-year-old male and the 10-year-old boy. Unfortunately the father succumbed to his injuries at the hospital,” said a fire official.

Firefighters say there was a smoke detector in the apartment but it was not working at the time of the fire. The cause is still under investigation.

Ouch, my sympathy to the 10 year old boy. If he does live it will be hard on him with this on his mind. Well, off to check the batteries in my detector.

Two Killed In Brooklyn House Fire

A man and a boy were killed in an early Sunday morning fire in Brooklyn.

The flames broke out shortly after midnight on the second floor of a three-story building on Hancock Street in Bushwick.

The 12- and 33-year-old male victims were taken to Wyckoff Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, autopsies are set to be performed today on the five people who were killed in yesterday morning's deadly apartment fire in Manhattan.

The fire occurred in a sixth-floor apartment at the Robert Fulton Houses on 18th Street and Ninth Avenue in Chelsea.

Maschay Joa Valdez, 40, and Delkis Balbuena, 34, were killed, along with their three daughters, aged eight years, three years and 15 months.

Fire officials said the family died of smoke inhalation after the fire started in the kitchen and spread to the living room.

A 10-year-old boy was taken to Jacobi Hospital in critical condition.

Firefighters said there was a hard-wired smoke detector in the apartment that was unplugged and the battery that served as backup had been removed.

New York City Housing Authority officials said the detector was checked twice this year and worked properly both times.

Wouldn't surprise me if half the mandated smoke detectors in the country were in this state. If they want people to leave them in working order, they need to make them so they don't constantly go off for little or no reason.

Imperfect devices, at best.

Causes Of Weekend's Two Deadly Fires Determined

The Fire Department is stressing the importance of smoke detectors after determining that matches and candles caused two deadly fires over the weekend that killed seven people, including four children.

Fire officials confirmed this morning that the fire in Brooklyn early Sunday that left a man and his nephew dead was sparked by a lit candle.

Simeon Frasier, 12, and his 33-year-old uncle, Sean Monderson, died when flames engulfed the third-story apartment.

According to the Daily News, Fire Department officials were unsure if there were any smoke detectors in the entire building.

Officials also determined this morning that a Saturday's deadly Manhattan fire was caused by a child "playing with a lighter or matches."

On Saturday morning, flames ripped through a sixth-floor apartment in the Robert Fulton Houses on 18th Street and 9th Avenue in Chelsea, killing Maschay Joa Valdez, Delkis Balbuena and three of their four children.

Firefighters say the apartment's smoke detector was unplugged and the backup battery was removed.

A fourth child, a 10-year-old boy, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Building Dept. Investigates Brooklyn Fire Site

The Department of Buildings is investigating whether the site of Sunday's deadly fire in Brooklyn was illegally converted to add more apartments.

City law requires buildings with multiple apartments to have smoke detectors in hallways and other common areas.

But fire marshals say the apartment on Hancock Street in Bushwick where 12-year-old Simeon Frasier and his uncle Sean Monderson died had no smoke detectors.

Investigators say candles sparked the flames.

A funeral home has offered free services for the victims, but the family has not yet finalized plans.

Surviving Son Of Manhattan Fire Victims Dies

A Manhattan boy has died, nearly a week after a deadly apartment fire killed his parents and siblings.

According to a family spokesperson, 10-year-old Gonzan Joa Balbuena was taken off life support yesterday after doctors determined he was brain-dead.

His parents and three sisters were killed Saturday in the fire at the sixth floor apartment they shared at the Robert Fulton Houses in Chelsea.
The viewing for the boy's father, 40-year-old Maschay Joa Valdez, is being held today in Manhattan's Chinatown.

Firefighters say there was a hard-wired smoke detector in the apartment that was unplugged and the battery that served as backup had been removed.

The New York City Housing Authority says the detector was checked twice earlier this year and worked properly both times.

Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta wrote in an editorial letter today that two-thirds of the 95 city residents who died last year in fires did not have working smoke alarms.

"A smoke alarm is your family's protector. Removing the battery or disconnecting the wire that connects it to your building's electrical system puts everyone's life at risk," wrote Scoppetta. "Even though fire deaths are at historic lows, every death is one too many. Many of them are preventable. Keeping a working smoke alarm in your home is critical to every New Yorker's safety."

One Dead In Roosevelt Island Nursing Home Fire

A nursing home resident is dead after a fire broke out early Sunday at a Roosevelt Island nursing facility.

Fire department officials say flames broke out shortly after 5 a.m. Saturday on the 11th floor of the Roosevelt Island Senior Association Center.

Police say after the fire was extinguished, a woman in her 70s was found unconscious. She was later pronounced dead.

One resident says it was a chaotic scene.

"We were all like sleeping and somebody came down hollering fire, fire, banging on the door to get out," said Gladys Dixon. "Then about that time the smoke detectors and all the bells went off ringing. So we got dressed and went running down the hall. They kept telling us which way to go, to come this way out the door. The only thing we just saw was a lot of smoke."

Police say the fire does not appear to be suspicious.

Victims Of Fatal Chelsea Fire Laid To Rest

It was a tearful farewell to the Manhattan family killed in an apartment fire earlier this month.

Grieving relatives and friends gathered at Saint Elizabeth's Church in Washington Heights Monday morning to say their final goodbyes to members of the Joa-Balbuena family.

Five white caskets carried the bodies of Delkis Balbuena, 34, her 10-year-old son, Jonzan, and her three daughters, eight-year-old Nanny, three-year-old Bet-El, and 15-month old Ruth.

All of them died after becoming trapped inside their burning apartment at the Robert Fulton Houses in Chelsea on October 11th.

"It was painful, and it is painful, and I know a lot of people in the community are in pain, especially going to the funeral and seeing five coffins," said one mourner.

"The sister is like now she doesn't have a sister to talk to and call anymore; she used to talk to her everyday," said another. "She used to spend time with her. They were always together, now they feel they don't have that sister anymore, who are they going to call?"

Fire officials believe it was accidentally sparked by one of the children playing with matches.

Community advocates say the deaths could have been prevented.

"We need to be educating families that smoke detectors are necessary," said Awila Cordero. "We need to tell them when to check it, when to change the batteries. All this information, if people have it, could have prevented it."

Funeral services were held this weekend for the children's father, Maschay Joa Valdez, 40, who was visting when the fire started.

Valdez's sister, Lily Joa, says although her brother was no longer living with the family, she wished he could have been buried with his children.

"My father wanted to pay for the funeral for all of them, but the family from the mother side didn't want them to do it all together," said Joa.
