Mark Kirk says he takes full responsibility for inaccurately characterizing a military award, and will correct other discrepancies if any are found. Kirk, R.-Ill., and his staff have long said he was named the Navy's intelligence officer of the year. Kirk says his official biography should have said the Navy's Rufus Taylor Intelligence Unit of the Year award was given to a unit he led in 1999 — not to him individually. Kirk, a five-term congressman in a tough race for President Obama’s old Senate seat, said his leadership helped the unit earn the honor and that he remains proud of his service. Kirk’s disclosure comes at a time when politicians face heightened scrutiny of their military records, thanks to a Connecticut Democrat who wrongly said he had served in Vietnam.
