Indian Planning Commission has incorporated the hydropower plan in the new five-year developmental plan for 2012-2017. From this controversial project India will generate 33,382 megawatts electricity. India is already building Barsar Dam in Kishtwar to supply water to the proposed hydropower plants.

Barsar Dam will have the capacity of storing of two million acres feet water, whereas according to the Indus Waters Treaty India cannot store more than 1.2 million acres feet water.
