Default I belong to the Hispanic Race...
Atleast according to the speeding ticket i got today. It's always interesting to see what police officers put in the race box when it concerns people like me, as this time around I got Hispanic. I think I will take a look at what was put down for my parents when they got tickets, just to compare.

Haha.

I'm one of the proponents of using the term in a racial sense though, so I won't argue with it. But I know some people don't agree.

The officer probably put that because I look like the stereotypical Hispanic, plus I dont look white, black or asian. Usually in the southwest Hispanic is used in the same way that the term Mestizo would be.

To elaborate, I got the W written on my ticket in the US Midwest some time ago. The policeman was a white anglo.

It's interesting how some Hispanics get classified differently depending on the region.

I honestly dont think they care enough to study the phenotype. Whatever they put down might not actually reflect what they really think. But it is interesting as you say

I have it as my Meta-Ethnicity not as my race though. My race is Bi-racial (NA & EU).

I guess it does depend on the regionand population demographics. In California Hispanics are equal in population to whites, which isnt the case in the Mid-West.

I think the term is quite arbitrary.. To use it as a racial concept seems derisory.. For example: A blue-eyed blonde Chilean named Sophie Neuenschwander would be Hispanic. However, a Brazilian with Spaniard parents would be non-Hispanic White.. Seems weird, doesn't it?

Yes, but the only reason why the term is sort of needed is because "mestizo" is often enterpreted as a pure 50-50 mix (as it was coined as). But that's not the racial reality in Lat.Am now. The admix varies greatly so "hispanic", as a racial term for a person of a euro-native background, fills that gap.

That's just _my_ way of looking at it though. For instance, George Lopez tested as 55 % euro, 32 % native, 4 % SSA and 9% East Asian - and he looks quite native imo. Eva Longoria is 70% euro, 27 % native and 3% SSA. It's easier to just call them "hispanics" without going into details in the whole mestizo, castizo, harnizo shit.

yeah, it's what we do here in spain... all of them are called 'sudacas' no matter if they're from mexico or tierra del fuego near the south pole.

and also it doesn't matter what race they are, we are raceblinded towards them and then they call us 'racists'

Fking stereotypes!

I see, those people, who cannot distinguish such categories as race, ethnicity, nationality etc, are really funny

But why do they need category "race" in those kinds of papers? especially if we consider, that they write what they want....

Those genetic tests they took are bogus. I came up 83% Indigenous american 17% European that is way off from my real scores.

Source?

Her test is from "Faces of America", a pretty high-budget series on PBS, very indepth about her roots, studying her family tree and so on.

His is done on his own TV-shot "Lopez Tonight" where they do it for a bunch of celebrities. I doubt they wouldn't put some effort into it for a TV production like that.

Because they need to fill some statistics to avoid racism, bitch. For example, when you apply for a job in the USA you have to provide your ethnicity and, afterwards, the state takes a look at the statistics of each employer. If the applicants from a given ethnicity are being rejected all the time (or in a higher proportion) by a certain employer, said employer may have problems.
