I have a question for the african american members of the forum, also for the others american , but more for the aframs .
I know majority of afram are very christian especially in the Bible belt, who has a very big Baptist community . What is the opinion of christian afram about the muslim ? I also know since the late 60s many aframs convert themselves to the Islam . With what I read , it was accepted in the american society for them to be muslim . Islam was almost see as an afram religion by other american ethnic groups . But since the event of 11th september, I think the view has change a lot . I would like to know . How christian afram see muslim afram ? Do they consider them as traitor ? Does a hatred or mistrust exist ? Does christian afram make a difference between muslim afram and non-afram muslim ? .... I would like to know . |

I personally dont buy into the slander of Muslim people and Islam. True Islam is peaceful. Islam has a very long and extensive history within West Africa, although I think many African-Americans are not aware of that truth they dont hate black Muslims. Islam greatly influenced black movements in America (Malcolm x) and is respected within the community in my opinion. More so in the Northern states though
---------- Post added 2012-06-08 at 21:33 ---------- The Nation of Islam is a little different from traditional Islam I think. Its focus is more so on Black Africans but I highly doubt black Christians look down on the Nation of Islam because of 9/11. |

Nation of Islam is not a traditional sect of Islam and is not seen as such by Muslims I know.
Personally I view them as a racist cult. I put them in the same category as the "God hates Fags" people, child molesters like Tony Alamo, or suicidal maniacs like David Koresh. Traditional forms of Islam are practiced by various immigrants as well as black and white Americans, and I generally have a positive view of it. There's a Sunni mosque / Islamic center about 5 miles from my house. I know a Pakistani guy who is part of that group. An Ismaeli center is also nearby. I know an Indian guy who is part of that group. I have no problem with them. |

It's common to see NOI dudes in their suits and bow ties, handing out their newsletters and selling bean pies or whatever, in predominantly black inner city areas. Other Aframs don't run them out of there. They are probably viewed sort of like how whites view Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses, as a minor annoyance.

Ok. You're welcome to substitute whatever politically correct and culturally sensitive label makes you feel better. |

So did you come up with a more honorable label for a guy who led his cult into a gun battle and siege which resulted in all of their deaths? Hero, Martyr, Prophet, whatever you think he is, you can call him that. I didn't call him a racist, so not sure what you mean there... maybe you mean what I said about NOI. If you like, we can debate the creation theory of whites by Yakoub on the isle of Patmos, if you're into that sort of thing.

The attitude and view of Muslims varies by region and age group, but in general I do not believe that Aframs have any strong feelings about Muslims in general. Most of the negative stereotypes and vibes are centered around those of Middle Eastern descent. Aframs would probably not view black or white Muslims in the same light as those of Middle eastern desecnt . Elderly Aframs are more likely to have a negative view of Muslims, and aframs with strong evangelistic inclinations will strongly disagree with Muslims on religous grounds.
Overall I would say that the general view of that the Afram community has of Islam and Muslims ranges from neutral indifference, to passive wariness. It is alot less likely to find an Afram ranting about the "evils" of Islam than it is to find a Wam doing such. ^This is from my experience. |

my mom's family actually has a long line of muslims further than the 60's... I have nothing against muslims but I do find there's a difference between the foreign and english muslim. People are also always shocked when my mom says she's muslim same sorta with me when people don't think I'm foreign... I don't feel judged only when it's around christmas time otherwise it's all good...
