NFLPA has filed a grievance;

The NFLPA contends that in connection with 2011 CBA, the NFL released all players from conduct prior to execution of CBA on August 4, 2011.
That's bullshit, and they know it.

That's legalese for 'we know what we were doing was shitty, but we're under a new contract, so we want it to not count'

Nice, punish the Packers (and browns) after the draft for what the Saints did.
GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Green Bay Packers weren’t counting on Anthony Hargrove to be a savior this season. They were fully aware that the defensive end could be suspended for involvement in the New Orleans Saints’ bounty program. His contract reflected that. Source

They knew what they were getting.

And they should fine them for trying to get out of it.

I think they have a point, but they did also screwed themselves in the 10 year CBA they signed.

They gave Goodell sole power to decide appeals on "off the field" issues.

Now they can say that this is "on the field", but that is a weak case since all of the lying took place off the field.

True, but did they think they would lose him for half the season?

Like the $36 million penalty on the Skins on the eve of free agency, the timing of the announcement is a dick move.

I think the Vilma penalty is harsh. It's more of a institutional problem and was encouraged by coaching and management. They should pay the higher price.

Although I've read that Vilma restructured his contract a little while back to make $1 million of his 2012 salary a bonus. So he does get that, but losing a year of playing in his prime is unfair under the circumstances, IMO.

Agreed. That is such a huge penalty. Payton has coached 15 years in the NFL with 5 coming as a head coach. He's 48 and, given his success, could easily coach another 10-15 years. Vilma may only have a handful of years left. So to give them both a year doesn't seem fair.

As a side note, did anyone hear Mike Greenberg talking about this? I agree with him about the player suspensions seeming high, especially for Vilma, but he compared football players to children who can't make decisions for themselves. Does anyone else find that extremely offensive? I'm tired of him acting like these athletes, collegiate or professional, are victims of anything but their own decisions.

Mike Greenberg is frequently wrong about everything.

What if he caused a career ending injury or two and some guys lost several years of their careers?

But it didn't happen, did it?
There's a difference between attempted murder, accessory to murder and actual murder and the courts understand that. Goodall is judge and jury here with no nuance allowed. This was a failing of the management and coaching staff of the Saints. If it hadn't been Vilma, it would have been someone else.

But it was Vilma. And he could have chose to let it be someone else.
