I think the biggest thing that the NFL had a problem with is the lying and the attempt to guide the league away from the accusations. I saw the Goodell interivew and thats the feeling I got. I mean the Saints are done, I can see free agents seeing New Orleans as bad now and can even see Brees walking away. I think losing Petyon is pretty huge too but I do think it was warrented. If anything this opens up the NFC South for the Bucs to wake up this season and steal the division.
New Orleans is not exactly a dream destination.

did RG take away draft picks for the salary cap violations?

I bet if the iggles win their first 10 games, you'll be on the bandwagon.

And the NFL had no choice but to come down like a ton of bricks on the Saints. They're already getting sued by ex-players. If they let it go or gave a wrist slap, they'd be open to further lawsuits for years to come.
I don't see why the NFL should owe any of those guys a penny.
This I agree with. These players know damn well what playing football can do to you. You take a ton of money to get paid to play. The fact that most of them blow it with out thinking down the road should not be the NFL's cross to bear. With that said, I think the punishment was just. I like Greg Williams better though.

Talk about hypocrisy. If the NHL was serious about discouraging fighting, they would just outlaw it.

There used to be a reason for it to discourage stickplay when players didn't wear helmets and faceguards. But now they are geared up like transformers, so what's the point? And they never do it in the palyoffs, which is really the only hockey worth watching.
I have been down this road many times b/4, and have to throw in College Hockey - which seems to be everywhere now on the cable sports networks - and Olympic Hockey which draws a ton of new fans to the sport when it is on.
The big problem is that the "paying" fans love it. They seem to cheer more whenever there is a skirmish than when a goal is scored.

Candy assed nonsense... taking a stand cause the league brought the hammer down hard on a pay for injury scheme.

I watched a decade worth of Matt Millen GMed Lions football, and did not boycott, call me when you wash the sand out of your vah jay jay, and figure out a the real reason you wanna boycott the NFL, to goto Bed Bath and Beyond and pick out some bedding, and candles and woman crap.
I like you.

horseshit. the players that are trying to get money from the league are the older players that DID NOT know damn well what playing football could do to them(besides torn muscles, ligaments, broken bones, etc). Not a single person knew the damage it would do to the brain.

I dont know the whole list, but it started with the older players, much older. even guys from Dorsey's "era"(e.g. the 90s) didn't know full well what could happen. we see a number dementia and/or death cases since his time.

Did the NFL even know? I mean at some point they started to put 2 and 2 together but the fact of the matter is players are getting bigger, faster, stronger which means the collisions are going to become more severe. There may be a window where the NFL did nothing and perhaps lawsuits would be appropriate there, but at some point personal responsibility needs to be used as well. I hate the litigious society we live in today! (No offense Kobes or any other attorneys that post on here )

They did not know that running into each other at full speed with their heads could cause long lasting head injuries?

not to the extent it has. Im sure Ali knew head injuries would happen but do you think if he knew what he'd be for the last 20 years he have continued?

I think boxing is different in that one of the objectives is to try and knock somebody senseless and they all know it.

And I also wonder whether what Ali has is a result of boxing. He has Parkinsons, right? Can you get that from head trauma? I know about 5 people with Parkinsons and none of them can trace it to something like that.

freddie roach believes boxing probably contributed to him getting parkinson's. btw, if you have hbo you should check out the series they did on freddie roach.

And a lot of them didn't really get paid a ton.

yes, and you can certainly get it from repetitive brain trauma.

this isn't my proof but my Grandpa was a boxer in the Navy and had Parkinsons pretty bad too.
