I watch at least one football game every sunday and have for many years, but I could not name a single ref.
Everybody knows Ed Hochuli.

He's an attorney (and workout junkie) during the week.

Off the top of my head, I can also name Mike Carey and Jeff Triplett.

As much as I agree on Full time refs, what do they do the other 7 days of the week during the season? All other sports w/ full time refs (though I am not sure about pro soccer) have multiple games a week to justify paying them full time...and there is no off-season they can be working, while in baseball at least there are fall leagues they can work and then spring training.
for the amount they already pay the part time refs, Im sure they could find a few million people that would love to be paid that much for full time "work".

Do you know this man?

The point is that refs SHOULD be anonymous (generally speaking) in the context of the game.

In MLB, would you know who Jim Joyce is if replay were available to fix the mistake in Gallaraga's perfect game?
That guy is on roids.

Do they even announce the refs names on a tv broadcast like they do on every baseball broadcast?

Agreed. But we know Ed for his guns, not necessarily because of how he handles a game.

I've always thought he was fine.

Since the thread has turned to officials so much, what is everyone's thoughts on where an official lives and works the other 6 days of the week? Should that be considered when officials are being assigned to games?

I think they should live like the players...

with all the hookers and blow they can handle.

Well, maybe not.

until that san diego/denver game i thought he was pretty good.

then he followed that up with the mn/no game where, although the rules he made up helped the vikes, was almost as bad.

now i consider him to be middle of the road.

ahh yes, that was him on the AP fumble that wasn't a fumble....(it was ruled not a fumble, but by any measuring stick, was a fumble)....

I agree with the 10 second rule.
I also agree with 3 strikes challenges, rather than three total challenges.
I also want to see two false starts within the 2 called a safety.

"the runner had the ball, lost control of the ball but it was never out of his grasp, therefore no fumble"

something like that.

Reminds of the badger/gopher call on a what appeared to a fumble recovered by MN

The Wi player caught the ball before he fumbled it. First down badgers

I have to manage that aspect of my officiating career on my own....my assignors only know they have games to cover....

I did not do the youth leagues in my home town.....I do not do games at the HS where my children and I graduated from........and I do not do college games for my or my son's alma mater....

I certainly can officiate those ball games without a problem...but its not worth the hassle

The Packers had a player in camp last year whose dad was an NFL ref. I wonder if he's still around.
