he NFL owners decided to pass a change in the overtime rule that would give the team that loses the coin toss at the start of overtime to get a possession if the coin-toss winning team scores a field goal with the first possession. The proposal was passed by a vote of 28-4 as written just for the postseason, but the owners have decided to discuss adopting the changes for the regular season at their next meeting, in May in Dallas. |

I was thinking about the application of this to the regular season.
And I'm against that. I don't want extended OT. Instead, I wonder about having NO overtime in the regular season. If the game ended as a tie, how would that impact the NFL? Clearly a defined winner has to be declared in the playoffs - but in the regular season, it's really not that important. |

So if the tm who gets posession first hits a Fg, the othe tm can has an opportunity to come back? I suggested that a couple of months ago. EDIT: I actually advocated 5 points, to give love to a safety. I haven't read the specs - perhaps the rule is 'more than 3 points'. Here's the thread from September. |

I don't believe it would be an extended OT in the regular season. You could still have a tie in the regular season. In fact, I think if a team has a lead, even by three points, at the end of a quarter, they would win. At least the other team had a chance to tie or win. Rarely, they'll go a whole extra frame. I'd expect that using the new rules would actually extend the average OT - it takes longer to score a TD than to kick a FG, and if you DO kick, the other team gets a shot. So the average game - when they are stacked back-to-back-to-back - that does go into OT would be longer than they are now. |

Well, now OT usually doesn't last very long. One team or the other scores within the first 5 minutes. |
