Default Cleveland Browns seem close to hiring Mike Holmgren
http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/...all-operations

Former Seattle and Green Bay coach Mike Holmgren, with one Super Bowl title and success brimming from an impressive NFL resume, is spending his second day meeting with the Browns about running their football operations.Holmgren arrived Monday after being invited by Cleveland owner Randy Lerner. He was again at team headquarters in Berea, Ohio, on Tuesday along with his agent, Bob LaMonte. Holmgren is not scheduled to leave Tuesday, a sign that could indicate the sides are working out details on a contract.
Browns spokesman Bill Bonsiewicz said Holmgren was scheduled to meet with coach Eric Mangini, but did not know if that meeting has taken place.
The length of Holmgren’s stay — and LaMonte’s inclusion — points to his strong interest in taking over the Browns, who have struggled since returning to the league as an expansion team in 1999. Cleveland has had four coaches, just two winning seasons and one playoff appearance in 11 years.

I thought Mangenius had total control.

Would Holmgren be coach & GM, or just GM? Or higher than that, while leaving the current bodies in place (for the time being)?

I get the impression he's looking for a position like Parcells has in Miami.

That would make sense, but Mangenius will get axed pretty quickly.

Who comes in as coach if that happens? Who would Holmgren trust to run the team?

Brett Favre.
That only works if Favre has GM duties, so he could finally trade for Randy Moss, throw TD's to him and bring in a puppet coach like Chili.

He would demand to be traded and demand Chili to accompany him along to drive him to Cleveland and anywhere else he wanted to go along the way.

And offseason programs would be total chaos since Favre can never decide whether he wants to hang around for another year.

Still wouldn't work.

It's cold outside in Cleveland.

Just spitballing, but...Gruden, Mooch, Haskell...all guys from Holmgren's coaching tree...

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, he would demand they build a roof over their stadium first.

If Holmgren takes over Cleveland Browns, Mangini is likely out

By Mark J. Miller

Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini has enough problems on his hands. He's "coaching" a team that has won two games this season and lost 11. But now he's got to be worries about Mike Holmgren coming in as the new "football czar" in Cleveland. The word is that if Holmgren and the Browns work out a deal for him to come onboard, Mangini will be shown the door, according to NFL.com. Holmgren is apparently "very interested" in the job and is ready to take the team in a "new direction."
It looks like Holmgren is going to have his chance. The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that a deal has been offered.
That new direction would very likely include a new coach. Folks that would get considered probably include Jon Gruden, Steve Mariucci, Jim Zorn, Dick Jauron, and Marty Mornhinweg.

Marty Mornhinweg? Is that some kind of a joke?

I think Mike Sherman may be a candidate for the HC job if Holmgren takes over there.

I thought Jim Zorn was more of a shocker, redskins improved after bringing a guy out of a bingo parlor

Dear god, I hope not.

For a rebuild, I'm not sure I'd want any of those guys.

Not for a rebuild. You give Gruden a veteran QB and some solid parts, and he'll do well. You want him to build from the ground up, particularly develop a QB, and you'll get squat.
