Are you talking about Bill Bidwell, owner of the Cardinals football team?

Bidwell has one nut? Really?
TAMPA -- Josh Bidwell has more reason to be thankful than perhaps any of his Tampa Bay Buccaneers' teammates.

Bidwell, the former Green Bay Packer punter, is a cancer survivor.

At 23, during training camp of his rookie season in 1999, Bidwell was diagnosed with testicular cancer.

"I wasn't sure I was going to live, much less come back and play professional sports," said Bidwell, a fourth-round draft pick out of Oregon who is entering his fifth NFL season. "It was a long road and there were times I was just so fatigued, 45 pounds under weight, and hurting that I couldn't walk 10 yards without having to rest.

"It was so rough that my wife, who was my girlfriend at the time … would have to physically pick me up out of bed and take me to the rest room. I had absolute humility, I couldn't do anything on my own."

Bidwell underwent his first surgery on Sept. 1, 1999 and was placed on injured reserve, missing the whole season. He subsequently needed another surgery and two chemotherapy treatments in the following three months.

"I wasn't really scared of dying," Bidwell said. "I was really stressed out about the road. I didn't know what was coming up. I had to keep waiting for people to tell me what was going to happen and the news kept getting worse. My doctor would come back and say, 'Hey, we found more, you have to have another surgery.' Then the doctor came back and said, 'Surgery revealed more, you have to have chemo.' I just kept thinking, 'When is it going to end?'

"I'm just thankful to the Lord that I can lead a normal life with my wife and hopefully future family. I've really been blessed with perspective I have now because I take a whole lot more things a whole lot less seriously."

In Tampa, he is continuing his offer to speak to cancer patients and promote awareness of testicular cancer, which is highly treatable if detected early.

"Usually I'm talking to four or five people any given week who are going through cancer," said Bidwell, 28. "I welcome anybody who calls or sends me fan mail, or somehow gets my e-mail or my number.

"It's a scary time and families need somebody who has been through it to help them understand what's coming up and how good of a grasp they have on defeating this type of cancer."

He signed with the Bucs in March as an unrestricted free agent, mainly because the warm weather in Florida offered better conditions for him to ply his trade.

"Without a doubt," Bidwell said. "If you hit a bad one it's still going to go further than it would in the cold up North where I've been, so it's a nice change.

"I want to play as long as I can and I knew if I come down here I could do well and hopefully earn the respect of the team and management and stick around here for a while."

Punting in windy Green Bay often became an adventure.

"You drop the ball (to punt) and it's like throwing a Frisbee in a tornado," Bidwell said. "You don't know where it's going to go and it's such a fine line hitting the ball right in the sweet spot, getting a good spiral, getting it downfield and not (hitting right).

"When you get in that situation where it's swirling, 35-40 mph at times, that can blow a ball almost off your foot completely. It's pretty nerve-wracking."

He has punted in four games at Raymond James Stadium, three of those coming in the month of November.

"Later in the year, it's always been my experience that it's not very windy in Raymond James Stadium," Bidwell said. "As the year goes on, it gets better kicking conditions, which is an encouragement to me."

Bidwell began showing his potential in Friday night's loss to the Jaguars in Jacksonville, where he was kept busy by the Bucs' failure to get a first down in the first half.

He finished with a 44.0-yard average on eight punts, a 40.4 net average, including a 57-yarder.

"I'm in as good of a groove as I've ever been," said Bidwell, who has a 41.1- yard career average on 308 punts in 64 games.

"He came back and played well this game. He struggled a little bit the first game," said Bucs special teams coach Rich Bisaccia. "He's an explosive guy. He's got a big leg."

Bidwell's other duty is being the holder on field goals and extra points for kicker Martin Gramatica.

"He's a really good holder," said Bucs head coach Jon Gruden. "He gets the ball down. Gramatica's comfortable there. He's a good directional punter. He's got good hang time and get-off times and he can throw the ball and he's athletic. So there are some things you can do scheme-wise with him."

Bisaccia said Bidwell needs work punting the ball to land inside the 20-yard line.

"We're just working hard in the red zone," Bisaccia said. "It's something he wants to work on, that he needs to work on, something we've been really good at here in the past, and need to continue to be good at."

Bidwell has known Gramatica since they were roommates at the East-West Shrine Game after their senior seasons of college.

"He's a great friend, always has been," Bidwell said. "He took care of me, gave me a call when I got sick. It was nice to see us get drafted and go our separate ways, but it's a lot of fun to be here together."

Gramatica phoned Bidwell when he heard the Bucs were trying to sign him.

"He said, 'Hey, this isn't a ploy. They're not trying to get me in any way to influence your decision, but it would be pretty sweet if you came down here,'" Bidwell said. "I knew this would be a place I'd be comfortable with and a guy that I would hang out two hours a day that is a good friend of mine."

"He's a quality guy and a good teammate," Gramatica said. "We get along well. Josh is a good punter and has been a solid addition to our team."

Bucs notes

RB Charlie Garner, LB Jeff Gooch, G Matt Stinchcomb and WR Charles Lee (limited basis) all returned to practice Sunday.

"Fortunately for us, we don't have a lot of injuries that appear to be significant enough to hold guys out of regular season time," Gruden said. "But we do have a lot of guys (Derrick Deese, Derrick Brooks, Joe Jurevicius, Matt O'Dwyer) who are unable to go right now and that is a concern. But that is part of the problem that we're dealing with."

Gruden said he hasn't decided the quarterback rotation for Saturday's game against Miami.

"I'll tell you, we took a step back at that position," Gruden said. "I'm not losing confidence in either one of the quarterbacks (Brian Griese or Chris Simms), but we've got to do a better job in the pocket."

Ok, I was talking about rooting for the Cowboys because of Bill Bidwell, and also because the Cowboys were always on local tv here on Sunday.
