Defensive tackle Corey Simon was activated from the physically unable to perform list by the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday. No one was more surprised than Simon.
"This is the first I've heard of it," Simon said when reached by phone. "It's news to me." What the Colts intend was unclear. Simon refused to discuss the possibilities and club president Bill Polian, the team's spokesman on player issues, did not immediately respond to an interview request. The activation could be a procedural step in the process of terminating the seven-year veteran's contract. In two years since signing with the Colts, Simon has been paid more than $14 million in bonuses and salary but played only 13 regular-season games. Calls to Simon's agent, Roosevelt Barnes, were not returned. Simon did not play last season after undergoing surgery on his left knee during training camp. He was placed on the league's non-football illness/injury list for an unspecified condition in October and the team did not pay him $1.9 million of his $2.5 million base salary Simon filed a grievance in an attempt to recoup the lost salary. He would not comment on the grievance Thursday but made one thing clear. "I am not retiring," he said. "Retirement is the last thing I plan to do." The club also signed defensive back Norman LeJeune on Thursday. LeJeune has played in a total of seven games with Miami the past two years. |
