Default Saints- Mysterious forces at work?
I was watching ESPN and they brought up the almost-weres from the off-season. I did some further research.

Tom Benson almost moved the team, the NFL stepped in and said "Oh, no you don't, jackass!'

Sean Payton almost went to Oakland. He turned them down and took the New Orleans job. Thank Al Davis for being the worst owner in the NFL.

Miami chose to go after Culpepper instead of Brees. No telling if Brees would have signed there, but you gotta admit that the Miami job was loads more attractive pre-draft.

Houston drafts Mario Williams. Reggie bush falls into the Saints hands. They now can keep McCallister fresh.

The convoluted compensatory pick process awards the Saints pick 252. The saints had no net loss or gain in free agency. This pick is awarded one pick ahead of Green Bay which did have losses in free agency. Unusual way to proceed, but who really cared when it happened?

The Saints use pick 252 on Marcus Colston. Colston could have been a free agent or he could have been picked in the last few picks by somebody else. The point is, if the NFL hadn't decided, based on some top-secret formula, to give the Saints an extra pick, then Colston is possibly not even on an active roster this year.

So this year, the Saints could have been:

The San Antonio Saints with Mike Sherman at coach, AJ Hawk at LB, an over-worked McCallister, Culpepper at QB, and a suspect WR corps.

Amazing.

I think the Houston drafting Williams was the oddest thing.

It did look like the team was moving out of NO and if it weren't for Katrina, I bet they would have moved.
