NFL | Hawaii may bid for the 2016 Super Bowl
Sun, 5 Mar 2006 21:23:11 -0800 Pacific Business News reports Aloha Stadium's top management wants to upgrade the sports complex so the state can make a credible bid to host the Super Bowl in 2016. Stadium management is convinced that the planned $129 million stadium makeover could help lure the National Football League's 50th Super Bowl to Hawaii. They said that would give the state about 10 years to plan and build 32 luxury suites and add 10,000 more seats to satisfy NFL requirements for hosting a Super Bowl at the 50,000-seat stadium. Brian McCarthy, an NFL spokesman, acknowledged that Aloha Stadium management has informally pitched the idea to the league. McCarthy said he wouldn't rule out the possibility of a Super Bowl in Hawaii, but described it as a long shot. |

Personally, I don't think it's really all that feasible to have the SB in Hawaii. The location alone prices many folks out of going to the SB. I know the Pro Bowl does draw a huge crowd every year, but it still less than the SB. Anything involved with the SB in the contiguous 48 is expensive enough every year, then add on the flight costs and the rest for for hotels and whatnot, it ain't cheap.

How on earth are they going to pay for those stadium modifications if they don't get a Super Bowl? I personally like the idea of it, I don't think attendance would be a problem - if you plan on going to a Super Bowl I think you already plan on being out a significant chunk of change so the extra to fly to Hawaii instead of Maimi or San Diego shouldn't be a big deal.

I'm against it. SuperBowls are played in NFL stadiums. No NFL team plays in Hawaii. I would also be against having a SB in Los Angeles till they geta team again.
This would also make it blatently official that the NFL doesn't care about the average fan. There were a ton of people that drove up from Pittsburgh to the Superbowl this year. Even those that can't go to the game drove up for the atmosphere. With limited flights to/from the island I can only imagine what airfares would do too. I Boooo on this idea. Its not WBC bad, but its bad. |
