Default NFL/College All-Star Game
How many remember the annual game between the college all stars and the NFL Championship team? The game was played from 1934-76, each game held at Soldier Field in Chicago. It pitted the reigning world champs against the best from the previous collegiate season. The game was played during the NFL pre-season.

It was pretty competitive in the beginning, but the NFL eventually began to win most of the games - though some were still decent games.

Another thing the NFL once did, was a consolation (3rd Place) bowl, known as the Playoff Bowl.

From 1960-66, the teams that finished second in each division met for the 3rd place contest, one week after the NFL Championship Game. From 1967-69, when the NFL expanded to four divisions, the playoff bowl was between the two teams that lost their playoff games.

Once the Superbowl began at the end of the 1966 season, the playoff bowl was played during the idle week before the Superbowl.

The AFL never had a playoff bowl.

I wonder, with the football-starved fans of today, how would the fans go for a playoff bowl the week before the Superbowl? This year it would have been the Broncos and Panthers.

Of course, I wonder if the players could really get up for the game anymore. Back in the 1960's, when money wasn't that great, the prospect of playing in the playoff bowl and gaining another paycheck was quite acceptable - even though, THE Coach, Vince Lombardi, was quoted as saying he did not like that game.

The 1963 game was where the legend of Ron Vanderkelen was born.

The former Badger and MVP of the Rose Bowl led the All-Stars past one of Vince Lombardi's best teams coming off a 14-1 season.

Vnaderkelen did nothing in the pro's, but he beat Lombardi's Packers.

Note the next 2 times Lombardi played the College All-Stars.

1966 38-0
1967 27-0

1968 Phil Bengston was the coach.
