Saints | State on Track for Payment to Saints
Fri, 1 Jul 2005 15:19:46 -0700 The Associated Press reports Louisiana Superdome officials said Friday, July 1, the state was on track Friday to make its annual multimillion dollar payment to keep the New Orleans Saints in Louisiana. Gov. Kathleen Blanco has been trying to renegotiate the agreement, but has agreed to make the payments. A loan was approved and a check for $13 million will be handed to the Saints Tuesday, July 5. |

I've heard of building new stadiums and the residents of the area paying boosted taxes (ala, Lambeau Field and Miller Park) for those purposes, but never have I heard of a state paying a team to stay where they are. What makes it seem even stranger, is that the Superdome is an aging facility that needs updates or to be torn down and the state of Louisiana has done nothing to improve that facility (atleast I've heard no news of that nature). Wouldn't it be just as effective to sink that money into the Superdome for the next several seasons so the Saints will continue to have a respectable facility to play at?
