I heard on the radio today that the NFL Commissioner's office is looking into reports that the Patriots have intentionally allowed the condition of their field to suffer in preparation for this week's game against the Colts.

The area has supposedly been hit by snow and rain all week and the stadium staff has not once rolled out the tarp, allowing the field to become muddy, choppy, and "heavy". They are doing this to try and slow down the Colts offense and turn the game into a smash-mouth affair.

The reason this has become such a big deal is because the Colts accused the Patriots of doing the same thing last year in the playoffs, which led to one of Peyton Manning's worst game as a pro.

It sure is nice to be in a position to be in control of the playing surface, isn't it?

The Giants did something like that in the 60s against the Dodgers. They saturated the dirt around first base so the Dodgers baserunners couldn't get a good jump while trying to steal.

The Meadowlands have huge retractable gates behind each end zone, they used to open the gate of the end zone the visiting team would be kicking to, and then close that gate and open the other when they switched sides of the field. This was never proven to affect kicking but it potentially could have

This practice continued until the league told them they couldn't open or close them during the game, they were either open or closed by kickoff and they had to stay that way the entire game

It's a shame Stl staff and players could not afford to order cattering service in advance. Also, with regata in Bos the same week and parents week in 10+ MAJOR colleges , over 30 MLB officials and coultless press people couild not find a hotel space in Boston area at all... Go figure
