I need help finding the author and/or title to a particular short story I read in the 8th grade (1989-90). Here's what I remember of it:
The story was set in an old english-like setting (fictional story, but the dating of the clothing). It involved a girl and her parents. The parents wanted their daughter to get married. If I recall the parents chose the husband for the daughter. The potential husband they chose for their daughter was named Lionel. He was an older gentleman (probably 30's?). A nice guy but he always got things reversed. This was the case when he would have to take items into town( I don't remember the quotes exactly, but have quoted them as close as I can remember and in the order the events happened AFAIK). Here are some examples: The girl gave him a jar of chicken fat. When he returned, the girl asked what happened. Lionel said "I put the jar in my pocket, but with the road being filled with bumps, the jar broke and went down my shirt." The girl replied "You were supposed to put the jar in the hay" She then gave him a couple of eggs to put in his pocket. When he didn't return with the eggs, she asked again what happened. Lionel replied "I put the eggs in the hay. But when we got off the wagon, I couldn't find them." She said "You were supposed to put those in your pocket." There were at least two other items the girl gave Lionel and both times he screwed them up. One of them was duck he was supposed to give corn but instead put a cloth over his cage and he died. The next item was some goldfish he was supposed to (maybe?) put the cloth over the bowl but instead gave it corn and they died. This is all I can remember of the story. |
