Default Have you ever? (56k warning, 20 pics)
... had the itch just to get up and go somewhere?

I finished work yesterday and got home to find my mum and sister had picked up my daughter and had went off for some fun at the park.

So I sat and twiddled my thumbs and looked outside at the glorious weather. To hell with it I thought and picked up my old camera... jumped in the car, made a note of the petrol in the tank (half full) and sped out of the driveway.

I decided to head into the hills and get myself lost... see what I might stumble across, so I traveled out along a familiar route and then turned down that road (you know the one you always mean to go down but never get round to?)

I documented my progress with these pictures for your viewing pleasure

Just to let you guys know i'm amateur at best... the camera is an old Fujifilm S5500 my dad gave me and all settings were on automatic. All pictures are unedited (though resized) from the camera... I should probably try something in photoshop but i'm not sure how best to go about it.

The Journey starts through the foothills
http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/5900/trip1cv5.jpg

Down those awkward back roads
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/2282/trip2jg9.jpg

This means unexpected obstacles
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/6893/trip3qk0.jpg

Climbing steadily
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/8135/trip4vl5.jpg

Stumbling across unexpected curiosities... in this case a giant Victorian lime kiln in almost perfect condition
http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/7776/trip5pv8.jpg

Also a crumbing fortress ruin named Tosson Tower.. no chuckling please
http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/6301/trip6xg6.jpg

Getting wild now...
http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/7852/trip7pd4.jpg

roads are becoming impassable... can only progress on foot now
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/698/trip8np0.jpg

Into the woods as we climb higher... I later learn that there are 4000 year old burial cairns somewhere in here... didn't bump into them unfortunately
http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/8418/trip9mv6.jpg

Signs of civilization... I followed the road as it was easier on my ankles than the boggy marsh but it ended soon after
http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/7047/trip10fv5.jpg

A lovely mountain stream... couldn't bring myself to drink from it though... not thirsty enough yet
http://img376.imageshack.us/img376/7813/trip11av0.jpg

Looking back over the forest and into the valley I could see a small village basking in the late afternoon sun
http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/7821/trip12gh3.jpg

Still got a fair way to climb though
http://img395.imageshack.us/img395/5192/trip13rq9.jpg

Loved this rock... for some reason it reminded my of a henge
http://img395.imageshack.us/img395/8026/trip14et6.jpg

Another couple of valley shots
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/6088/trip15bz3.jpg
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/6118/trip16qp6.jpg

Starting that difficult final climb up the craggs
http://img377.imageshack.us/img377/7429/trip17hg0.jpg

I loved some of the unusual outcroppings... the bones of the earth
http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/1600/trip18hk6.jpg

Finally the top... 500 meters above sea level and the world is spread out before me...
http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/3978/trip19dh1.jpg

I bumped into a climber who informed me that a wild goat was in the area... so I went looking for him and before too long I got him in my sights. He was a really beautiful fellow.
http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/7319/trip20oo8.jpg

thus began my trip back to the car... my memory card was full so that ended a great evening. My only dilemma was now I had to find my way home again.

thanks... yeah that little ford was deeper than it looks... I actually cheated and found a bridge further up [thumbup]

weather has been unusually good for Britain... almost feeling my British cynicism float away... this is not right

you rule stranded. that's awesome. I like to do the same thing but haven't in a while. You've inspired me. I'll have to do it asap.

I used to do it all the time. I'd go to a national forest or state park or something. Also try to find a small town historical tour and some cheesy attraction or waterfall or something. Furthest I've ever gotten is about 4 hours away one time. Ended up in a cheesy strip club in the middle of nowhere West Virginia called Lady Godiva's.[rofl] I ended up staying the night in some crap hotel and paid a stripper to come back with me[rofl] no, i don't have pics.i wish i did though

edit: i can't believe i just admitted that. oh well.

Awesome shots, just wish i could drive otherwise i'd be doing the same thing with my camera. The only thing i'd say about the photos is the ones with the Volvo in, the Volvo really spoils the shots.

LOL thats my pride and joy right there...

okay its a pile... but the general idea was to give a sense of direction and personalization, kind of a way of saying "I wos here"

Thanks for the feedback though... next time I shall be certain to keep the old jalopy well away from the camera [thumbup]
