Default Going DSLR
I plan to invest in a DSLR but don't plan to spend more than £500 on one and something that not to complicated to use.

So i got 3 in mind the Nikon D40, Samsung GX-1S or the Canon EOS 400D which one of these has the better kit lense till i can invest in a better one?, also what a good lense to go for to.

I would suggest your choice is between the Nikon D40 or the Canon EOS 400D.

Remember that when buying a DSLR you are not just buying a camera body, you are buying into a particular lens systems - in the case either Canon, or Nikon.

I went the Canon route mainly because Canon high ISO performance is still much better than Nikon. That and the fact the Canon lens on offer are more suited to my style of shooting.

The Canon kit lens is actually not bad, despite what some people say. Its capable, if a little slow, and actually pretty sharp all things considered.

Yeh was more drawn towards the Canon even thou the D40 is cheaper, I bought myself a cheap Fuji S5700 to practice with different ISO levels, ect on manual even thou it not a patch on a DSLR by messing about with different setting i got some really good results.

this was my first attempt

Full size shot if it works

ISO settings on my canon S1 are something i just tend to leave as is, ISO50 already has too much noise for my liking so theres no way i'll be going above that

,,quick question, when not cropping does a high resolution sensor go some way to disguise the noise? (due to the S1 only being 3mp it seems more obvious than others?)

similar picture to your with the S1:

is post processing something that most do with all of their images or do they not bother like me?

Yes and no - it depends.

When you resize an image to make it smaller, it also has the effect of hiding much of the noise. If you start with a higher resolution image, then there is a greater chance you'll need to resize it down (e.g for web display), meaning the noise will also get reduced.

for example if i took the same picture with a 2mp camera and a 7mp camera, i've had the comparison a few times when looking at both pictures 1:1/'actual size' (if thats the right terminology) both have comparable amounts of noise but when viewed to fit the screen the one with the high res seems to have considerably less noise.

If I am showing a picture to anybody, then they wont see it till its had a quick run through Photoshop. Mainly just curves/sharpness/cropping. You'd be surprised what a difference it can make.

Out of the cameras you have listed i would recomend the Canon. The Nikon is nice, but same issues as the D50 really. Samsung is in essence an entry level Pentax wich is really getting a bit long in tooth. I would really look into the Sony A100 as well (i don't know if its in your price range there or not) or the Olympus 410 They have absolutly great customer satisfaction. I know my GF shoots with the Sony and absolutly Loves it. But if i was you, i would go in to a shop an try them all in your hand, get a feel for them, and then make a decision. Don't wanna buy a nice camera and then find out you get hand cramps from it (i had that problem on the Canon) But all in all buy the one that feels right for you.

i would see if you can afford a D40 + 18-135mm kit. that lens is a very nice upgrade from the 18-55.

i have to wear gloves when i handle mine ... IT'S THAT SHARP.

el oh el?

no but seriously it's a fantastic kit lens. sharpness plus added range. it's a very capable every day lens regardless of price.

Well finally went out and bought the Canon 400D with the kit lens also a Tamron Di II AF55-200mmF4/5-5.6 lens to get me going, along with a 1gig mem card and a nice bag to stick it all in cost me just shy of £600+ £10 for a Tripod from work.

Not really had time to test it properly due to work will try and get some pics posted from it either sunday or Monday when im off work.

Next month i plan on buying the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0L USM lens for it so im wondering is a good lens for landscape shots.
