Default Can anyone restore some slide scans for me?
Hi guys.

Came across a big old box of slides in the shed (40 odd years old) and they are of my mum & dad and various other family members. Some of the slides are write offs as they have just perished.

Luckily, quite a lot of them are fixable, and I have borrowed my friends Epson scanner (with the mount, so it can also scan the little slides)

I am scanning them @ 600dpi and the pics are coming out @ about 5mb each (it does 1200dpi max, but is there any point given how small the slides are?) I am saving the files as JPEGS directly from the scanner, with minimal compression. Also, is "progressive" format any better than standard for jpegs?

The main problems are smearyness\ lack of sharpness, and faded colours.

I have quite a few that I dont want to post publically, but here is an example shot, if anyone could have a go, and show off their skills

If anyone has any tips, it would be great:

1) What format \ DPI should I scan them in as?

2) Are there any things I can do, to help the pics look better?

3) What programs \ filters etc are good to apply?

Best I could do in a few minutes:

Just changed the color balance, the contrast, the hue, the saturation, the healing brush, and did the 'smart sharpen' feature.

I dont even know if it's better or not but yeah.

i got the second photo.

what i've done:
level
color balance
saturation boost
unsharpen mask
removed dirt and hair

frankly there isn't much i can do because of the effective resolution of the image.

thanks guys[thumbup] not bad at all considering the state of the slides.

Im gonna be scanning quite a few in later before they rot \ degrade altogether.

Would be interesting to hear if anyone has any tips with regards to scanning the images?

Scan them at 1200DPI. DPI means dots per inch, so a higher DPI is especially useful with SMALL scans [yes].
And I'd save them as BMP before editing tbh, sure the quality loss with JPEG is really small but when they're low quality anyway there's no need to make it even worse...

Here is a nice 1200dpi scan I did (jpeg, with minimal compression)

Can anyone bring it back to life, I was impressed by the previous 2 in the original post[thumbup]

I'm interested to see what people can do (does the larger file help, now I scanned it better?)

to be honest, i don't think scanning at 1200DPI is necessary. The effective resolution of the photos are so low that you are just blowing up the blurries. I think 600dpi @ JPG is more than enough.

Well BandofBrothers, here is your first pic, fixed.

Color correction, sharpen and noise removal as usual, I also darkened the sky a bit and took the liberty of removing the power lines.
