The 4/1 battalion of Gorkha regiment, currently in Jammu & Kashmir, will replace the 22nd battalion of Rajput, regiment in Mhow, in October. The Gorkha regiment was raised in 1817. An advanced party has already reached Mhow says Times of India.
Magars and Gurungs constitutes the Gorkha Regiment and are recruited from Nepal The motto of the regiment is 'Kayar Hunu Bhanda Marnu Ramro' (It is better to die than to be a coward). The 4th GR, a part of the battalion was raised in 1857 at Pithoragarh. The 4th operated in the Lushai Hills in 1871, in China in 1900, and in Europe & Mesopotamia during the World Wars. One of the battalions formed part of the Chindits under Major General Orde Wingate DSO. Major D.R.H.Jackson's book on the British Indian Army, mentions Fourth Gorkhas as the most travelled one in the Indian Army. The 4th has been decorated for their roles in Ali Masjid, Kabul, Kandhar, Waziristan,Chitra, Tirah, Punjab Frontier, China, Givenchy, Neuve Chapelle, Ypres, StJuliene, Aubers, Festubert, Flanders, Gallipoli, Egypt, Baghdad and Burma. |
