Russia has proposed a new aircraft carrier for India with nuclear or gas-turbine propulsion. It is proposed to be built by Sevmash shipyard at Severodvinsk which has refitted INS Vikramaditya. INS Vikramaditya's water boilers run on diesel.
The design is based on an advanced carrier proposed for Russian navy by Nevskoye design bureau in St. Petersburg. The construction time is approximately sven and 10 years. Russia’s United Shipbuilding (OSK) said that it is also ready to assist India in the indigenous construction of aircraft carriers. it is proposing a joint venture for the same. The carrier will be capable of advanced self-defense systems to intercept high-flying targets, including low-orbiting satellites. The carrier will have a underwater capability with advanced manned or unmanned submersible vessels. The design is to be frozen by 2014. |
