The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that the construction of a controversial naval base on southern Jeju Island is lawful, giving the military the green light on the project, says Yonhap. In 2009, the construction was held up due to environment concerns.
Located in the South Korea Strait, Jeju Island or Cheju falls between the southern most tip of South Korea and Japan. It is 73 kilometres wide and 31 kilometres north to south. It is listed in the UN's World Heritage Site and is popularly called the "Hawaii of Korea" or "Honeymoon Island." The opposition to base started in in 2002 when the Korean navy announced plans to pursue an ‘ocean navy strategy.’ The strategy involves deploying large warships. Initially Hwasoon village in western Jeju, the primary location of the Japanese military during the Asia-Pacific War, was designated the site of the base. In 2005, it was changed to Wimi and in 2007 it was changed to Gangjeong. Navy planned to invest 8 trillion won to berth 20 sophisticated warships including 7,600-ton Aegis-equipped KDX-III destroyers. |
