Legend says that when King Thodaiman had to fight with kanthan and kurumban came to this place where the leg of his elephant was caught with mullai creepers.When king was trying to cut the creepers,he found the sivalingam where Lord helped him by sending Nandhi with king to fight.
It is also said that saint Sundaramurthy swamigal who had lost his sight at this time had sung verses on this temple.
