Default about alwaye-
Alwaye is situated on the banks of the Periyar the states largest river. Time was when Alwaye was a quiet little spot hardly busier than a populous village, expect in summer when the visitors who, found its cool current an antidote to the heat.
At Alwaye the broad periyar branches itself into two. The extensive delta thus formed is suitable for paddy sugar cane and coconut cultivations. During the south west monsoon the river is full with strong currents. During summer the river bed is exposed and one can see the vast stretch of gleaming white sand.
Alwaye is famous for its Siva temple situated in the middle of the river bed. The Sivarathri festival in the month of February attracts thousands of pious pilgrims. A fair lasting for several days is held in connection with it and the white sandy river bed is transformed into a miniature city with its bazaars and entertainment stalls. At nightfall illumination with electric lights makes it a fairy land.
Alwaye and its river have great historic association. The overflowing river halted advancing Tipu Sulthan who ordered a retreat. It thus saved Travancore from subjugation.
The proximity with Kochi by river road and rail has made it an ideal place for industrial and manufacturing establishments. About 12 miles upstream is Kaladi the birth palce of Sankaracharya.
