Felt very sad knowing this. I have watched him coming in as a judge on some of the Malayalam song shows. He seemed to be a very down to earth person and simple person. His comments showed no malice towards anyone whatsoever and he was appreciative of other music directors. His grip on Carnatic music was quite good.

A couple of years back, in the 2008 season, Idea Star Singer on Asianet had a 'light music' round, which featured the non filmi compositions of M G Radhakrishnan. I heard one song which was based on Rithigowlai and it was a very nice song. You could instantly make out that this was a composition of a very original composer. The Rithigowla that was painted was not like an exact replica of the classical Reethigowla nor was it like the Reethigowla that Illayaraja made famous in movies. It was a different Reethigowla. Radhakrishnan was able to paint a very nice colour.

After hearing that song, I thought I should find out which song was this and get a recording of it. Unfortunately I did not note down the words and as it happens once you don't do a job immediately, it just slips your mind altogether. So until I heard the news of this great MD's demise yesterday, I did not make an attempt to trace that song. Only yesterday I went through the relevant episodes of Star Singer and found the song. As luck would have it, it also had M G Radhakrishnan himself talking about the song. To those who haven't heard this song, here is the link:

And here is the same song, sung by the composer himself:

My heart goes to Smt. Omana Kutty ( M G Radhakrishnan's sister and a noted carnatic music singer) and M G Sreekumar. May we pray that Sri.M.G.Radhakrishnan soul rests in peace. A great loss to all music lovers.

He was 73? One of the classical, typical mallu composers - yet cannot be ignored as he was very good at what he did.
This also means Sreekumar should be well over 50, even assuming a 20 year age difference? He doesn't look like that for sure.

Thanks for the link raagadevan. I had also written a brief tribute to him in my blog. The Hindu tribute is more detailed and gives good information. Definitely a composer who was quite original.

raagadevan,

Thanks for the links. I haven't heard this song before. A very nice melody. It again showcases the talent of MGR to take up a classical raga and morph it to suit film music.
