An exceptional lady who came from a humble background having both parents toiling as hawkers at the long gone Pasir Panjang Hawker Centre, and who completely forgot about it. Between helping her parents and doing her schoolwork, she excellled acedemcially to attain the status of top 1% of her cohort. She graced the halls of Cambridge and in later years Harvard.
Began what was to be a stellar career in Govt and for the Govt, her first role was in MHA, where she honed her people and psychological skills in in the context of the country's politics. She broke bread and samosas with the future Prime Minister and noted his saint like demeanour and correctly predicted his meteoric rise to serve his country as the second great helmsman. At the call of her former Intelligence Chief she moved to the public listed but govt mentored country's well known, highly regarded broadsheet with the single aim to lead the people along a path of discovery and resurgence. It was start of a tremendous journey not only for this lady but for the country as well as we all walked in her footsteps. We began to question, we began to reason, we began to realise that we were all wasting our time. Never want to flinch and never want to follow convention, she is recognised as the first person in Facbooks history to successfully create a FB page not for friends nor associates, not for fellow or for people similar interest but for lesser beings and nuisance in the eyes of the govt. The fact that these people who invited her and accepted her invitations did not realise that no one of significance, importance or mildly friendly to her were on her facebook did not seem to cast any suspicion. That can only be atrributed to her skillful management of her sandbox which she controls and plays in. It was no surprise that she became the most noted Political Editor in the history of the Straits Times and it was also no surprise that in the 2006 General Elections she stepped in to pull the ear of the Prime Minster when his Minister of Home Affairs lost the plot and began to harangue and harass a political opposition candidate who is of little value to anyone. It attest to her calibre, her mettle and her remarkable presence that provided the Prime Minister the guidance he needed in the moment of need. Her single biggest achievement has to be her ability to influence the nation to march towards democracy in a manner and pace never imagined. In 2011, the nation delivered a GRC to an opposition party. The can only be one midwife and it is Ms Chua Lee Hoong known in close circles as Pravda Chua. I take my hat and pants off to a remarkable citizen, a luminary ahead of her times, an individual with a skin of exceptional texture and resilience and a manner that is beyond belief. |

Its actually a role that is found in both the American and Westminister model where the chief executive ( president / PM) is not elected directly but by a electroral college or a caucus. Singapore never had it until now where someone is trying real hard. Canada, OZ, South Korea and Philippines have seen this often.
That's a rather flattering description of her importance in the grand scheme of things. |
