Default Chennai Forums - A point of View
@Praveen

I notice that the member participation has declined very sadly on this forum. I have taken a back seat in the last month because the posts I write often get drowned by several articles posted in quick succession that can be read elsewhere. This is a demotivating factor. No one puts any thing original if so very rarely.

I must admire you and at the same time point out for putting on a brave one man show to keep the forum alive. Is there anything you can do to improve this situation? Some thing for motivation for more member participation? Anything to get members being active? Tell me if I am wrong?

In the best interests of your forum.

@Rajpriya,

It is indeed quite sad that things are like what it is. Part of the problem lies in the spammer prevention system that is in place. I have set it to disable spammers based on ip address. What this means is, almost 50% of ip's from India are in the list of known spammers.

So even if someone genuine wants to register they cannot do so, because their ip would be in the known spammer list and the registration would be denied.

Obviously i can remove this restriction but that would mean the number of spam posts and registrations would increase a lot.

Secondly, i am not comfortable with providing an incentive because once an incentive system in place people would then "expect" something for each and everything they do here. This is something that i do not want to encourage.

i am working on an advertising thing offline which should get us some good traffic. But i have been extremely busy with other stuff and personal life which has not allowed me to tackle this.

But yes, i will get that sorted out soon and by the next few months we will have something good going.

But for now, i will remove the ip address stuff so that registrations happen.

Thank you.

Oh! No, I am talking about incentives that involve paying money. Make it a discussion forum, allow blogging via your forum where you as moderator first scrutinizes the subjects or the themes of bloggers and then publish them so that the things don't get out of hand.

There are many other forums in which normally the administrator never takes part in posting anything. His job mainly a moderatos's job to see that things don't get abusive or the use of expletive language and finally watch spammers and keep control of the forum. At the moment it works like posting news from other online news papers which should not be the case. It encourages other people to do the same.

Always encourage people to write original stories of life's experiences in Chennai or even people living abroad who are from Chennai or even from Tamil Nadu. I hope you see my point. Or even take any news item and discuss pros and cons of the subject. If people start writing original stories you will automatically have traffic.

Will stand by you all the time and want this forum to be a success.

I am talking about incentives that involve paying money. Thats what i want to avoid. It is an easy way out. Pay ppl to post. This will set a bad example as people will expect to be paid everytime.
I was working with a major company 3-4 years when they decided to implement something like this. As long as this was in place, the posts and everything went on and the growth was awesome.

But the moment the reward system was stopped, it came crashing down.

Have to figure out a way which does not involve monetary compensation (in any form) and get members who participate. Whether that means taking an advertisement in some magazine or sponsoring a college event, that will be worth it because we are paying for publicity and not for posts

Hi Praveen,

Don't you think my prayers have been answered. You cracked a jackpot today and sluice gates are wide open and a miracle is happening. Enjoy this moment and pray it continues.

After almost a long silence I made a comment and seems the whole world was listening. Encourage all of them to come out with best in them. What about our friend Ramani Sir? Not heard from him for some time.

Sorry I made a mistake. What I really wanted to say was "Oh! No, I am NOT talking about incentives that involve paying money. I left out the "NOT" Sorry about that.

@Rajpriya:

Just like you, and for similar reasons, I have stayed in the background, because many of the postings were like a town-crier's announcement with no public response. Mostly it was a dialogue between you and me. I made a suggestion to Praveen about requesting some prominent citizens to join the forum, but Praveen has not bothered with the basic courtesy of a response as to why he could or could not do it. So I lost the motivation to post.

Moreover, the irritable videos with unmuted volume was a total disincentive, until I saw a recent complaint. They are still unmuted.

Because you had the courtesy of remembering me, I am posting this.

@Ramani Sir,

I had only you as a solid Partner to act in the best interests of Chennai Forums. When you stopped I stopped almost shortly. Losing my interest because instead of being a discussion forum CF was changing into more of a reflection of Deccan Chronicle.

You were absolutely spot on by saying "because many of the postings were like a town-crier's announcement with no public response".

When I could read DC online I saw logging into CF had no real purpose. Any way I wrote - Chennai Forums - A point of View - to see if things would change before I decide to quit altogether.

I hope Praveen gets the message and does the needful changes to decide if he needs our participation or not.

Thank you for responding Ramani Sir!

Yes of course, excepting few forum members, most regd. members are not participating. Whether view the site once a week also is in doubt. Anyway it all depends on various circumstances. Participating members are really bringing out some interesting topics. It is really nice. Some are sharing the up dates on various fields of daily needs and changes.

More participatory views really helps many forum members. Once one comes out with the views, others will have the opportunity to give further information.

Govindan
You say: “More participatory views really helps..” Correct me if I am wrong, but what I hope you are trying to say is that More participatory responses really helps…”, because people are viewing the posts all the time, but not responding or giving feedback.

When you look at the 'VIEW' counts, you will notice that there are a lot of viewers, but ..why there are not enough active responses? What circumstances? Visit some of the other forums, you will be impressed by the kind of active dynamic member involvement.

I am reminded of the road-side தெம்மன்கூத்தாடி தெருக்கூத்து show where people who are passing by, pause briefly to view what is going on, and then just leave!
