To safeguard one’s own respectability there are occasions where one needs to look the other way to realities. A true story that happened years ago on a tea plantation would serve as a good example.
It was a large plantation divided into 3 sections. Each division was under the supervision of different superintendents. To one of the sections a young man was appointed as a trainee superintendent. True to the instinct of many young people who wanted to prove their cleverness at their very first job, this young man too, started in a big way. He went after every possible opportunity to show how smart he was. Weeks passed, when one day he spotted a worker who he thought was doing something wrong sitting behind the tea bushes. The superintendent wasted no time in getting up to him to find out what the worker was up to. In fact the worker was smoking a beedi and hid behind the tea bushes as a mark of respect for the newly appointed superintendent. But, the young superintendent determined to catch the worker red handed walked up to him and questioned - "eh நீ என்ன செய்றே"? The worker who expected that the superintendent would ignore him because, he was trying to hide, answered – "நான் பீடி குடிக்கிறேன்". The young superintendent now very annoyed by the answer, wanted this worker suspended with immediate effect. This triggered a strike action by all the other workers in this section. Lesson: There are minor things that are better ignored to avoid major disasters. If someone hides something as mark of respect, it is better for the person of responsibility to look the other way. If you decide to look the other way you continue to be respected. Rajpriya |
