Last night I was asked to name a baby's nickname when it was born yesterday. To me it seems an honor but wondering if it is the same in Thailand. Also he told me he needed name to register baby. When a baby is born in Thailand are nicknames registered along with regular name?? Somebody please explain all this to me...

You do not actually say what your relationship is to the person that has asked you to give a nickname to this baby, but yes i too would look upon it as an honour. This person clearly holds you in high esteem.
As Betti says nicknames are not registered, just the birth certificate name. However with the help of my wifes family i have had to fill in and sign many forms recently regarding the birth of my son.On one of them i did have to state the babies nickname on it,but i am not actually sure why? Was with my wifes Mum at the time who speaks little English, but all i do know is that it had nothing to do with the registration.Probably just some internal hospital paperwork? |

yeah, right, let's just nickname every Thai kid Bossy, Fluke, Photo, Piano, Beer, Dollar, and the like because they are so much more modern. I was not suggesting that we should name Thai children with much more modern names. I just pointed out that ' Mali ' is an old fashion name ![]() ![]() ![]() Peace, ~Lime~ |

I spent a month in a village last january helping build a schoolhouse and while there made friends with him and his wife who at time was pregnant. Spent most every evening with him and we became friends. He is a farmer and I used to be one so we had a little in common. He asked me about 3 weeks ago if I would nickname baby and then last night I call hospital and he said he needed it for paperwork. So I nicknamed baby girl Jasmine and he was very excited. Funny he put baby up to phone so i could welcome her.

Jasmine in Thai is "Mali" and it is a well known nickname for girls. beautiful name. However, 'Mali' is rather an old fashion name now. A lot of Thai names nowadays tend to be foreign names ![]() And yes Betti is right, nicknames will not be registered. Maybe the guy who asked you didn't mean the nickname. In fact, he had 9 months to think of the name - lol. Peace ~Lime~ |
