I used to point at rainbows but was told that I would soon lose my fingers. It freaked me out, however, no one could explain to me why I would lose my fingers. I'm still puzzled!!!

I have noticed that a lot of Thai people cannot explain some of the beliefs they believe. Recently, I have thought about whistling in a house that we are not allowed to do. I tried to find an answer and doubt that they would believe me. I reckon that the reason we are not allowed to whistle in the house is because maybe it's too loud and they (members of the house - mainly an old generation) find it's annoying; but Who Knows!!!???? Funny thing is, we believe them because of the way they say. They make their sound so scary in stead of giving reasons.

Default meaning of rainbows??
Good evening! I live in the United States and occasionally go to a Thai restraunt in my neighborhood. I was eating my dinner and it had been raining outside and I saw a beautiful rainbow. When my waitress came back to my table, and I pointed the rainbow out to her to see. My waitress said that it is against their custom to point at a rainbow, and so I apologized. I was wondering if someone that knows of Thai beliefs and customs can share with me the meaning of rainbows?? Thank you for your time.

It did not stop a Thai police officer pointing, when I could not understand what he was saying.

For Buddhists, the rainbow is "the highest state achievable before attaining Nirvana, where individual desire and consciousness are extinguished."

But I think pointing at rainbows is considered bad luck in many cultures. Certainly here in Wales I have always been taught you shouldn't point at at rainbow or you will get bad luck.
