David, I have no idea if it's because the boss is a farang or not.
I only know our teaching assistants (who are qualified teacher with college degrees) get 6000-7000 a month. and that they are happy because government kindergartens pay 4000 or 4500 in the area, for managing classes of 30-40 3-year-olds, without help, 10 hours a day. we even heard of a salary around 3000 for this job. |

Well I don’t know if he is a farang keeniew or not.
As long as he’s not breaking the minimum wage law, I see nothing wrong with it. If she thinks it’s too low for her, then she should find somewhere else for employment. Just because he’s a farang, doesn’t mean he’s obligated to pay more than any thai employers of similar business. It’s called having a good business sense. And I’m sure he’s not forcing her to work there for that wage. Of course as a waitress, there is more money to be made from customer’s tipping also. That is how I see it. |

Based on working 30 days per month, Thai minimum wage will range from around 4,500 to 6,000 per month.

Since I have known her (over 5 years), apart from when she has worked day to day on rice farming or road construction, she has always been paid 6,000 Baht a month in every job. When she told me about this she just says it's because the boss is ½ÃÑ觢Õéà˹ÕÂÇ.

Where i am, i can't think of any waitress that gets anywhere near a basic salary of 6,000 baht a month - usually around 3,500-4,500 a month, and they are Thai - the Burmese and Laotians working here get slightly less than that, and most are working legally. On top of that basic wage most of them do get some tips however, best i heard of is around 100-200 baht a day (for normal restaurant with live acoustic)
Restaurants get away with paying less than the minimum wage cause they offer free food and sometimes free accommodation. So, making them exempt from the statutory minimum. Think of it, 2 free meals and drinks already comes to near a saving of 2,000 a month +, and if there's a room on top... Harder labour like road construction, factory etc... usually adhere to the minimum daily wage and also offer overtime, so paying much more than restaurant work. But of course, they don't get paid when they take any days off (unlike at restaurants). |

I now know she has two days off a month so is working 28 or 29 days depending on the month. And her wage equates to only 25 days at the minimum rate, and she has to pay for her room and meals.
Yesterday she was sick and didn't go in to work and was told that she will lose 400 Baht a day when she doesn't go in (yet she is being paid less than the minimum 180 Baht a day.) Today she is still unwell but has gone to work; it can't be good having an unwell waitress handling food but by the restaurant stopping more than twice her daily wage for sick days she has been forced in to it. All I know, David, is that a great many Thai people work for less than the minimum wage -even when the economy is booming -as the legislation is seldom-if ever -enforced, and to complain is to get fired.
But must state this knowledge is from news articles etc. and not from practical experience of knowing someone that has been affected. |

We always hear that modst people in Thailand only earn 6,000 Baht a month. My wife has just taken a job as a waitress in a Thai-Farang restaurant and is getting far less thanthis rate. Just wondered if anyone knows if it is common for lower wages?
I'm not sure yet of her working hours and days but her wage works out a 25 working days a month at the minimum wage for the Province. David |
