I have some questions for you to help you narrow your choices (there are dozens of schools teaching Thai these days).

1) Do you intend to study everyday, Mon-Fri, every week?

2) How many hours per day do you want to study 2? 4? 6?

3) Are you looking to start learning a solid foundation so that you can develop fluency in the Thai language over 3-4 years of combined self-study and class time in Bangkok, or just for small talk and general situations or...? Do you want to learn to read and write Thai?

4) Is your start date flexible, or do you already have set days that you will arrive and leave Bangkok?

i arrive oct 26th. i leave nov 22nd. have been working on my own with beginning thai book & CD. I am concentrating on learning to read & write as I do not want to develop too many bad pronunciation patterns, and I do not have a natural ear as my husband does. my goal is fluency. i have 2 sons who live in bangkok. One speaks near perfect Thai. My husband & i plan to move there in a year or 2. i wish to study every day, probably 4 hours, 6 may be a little ambitious. will be running in the bangkok marathon nov 18th so must work out a little.

For your purposes, I’d recommend one of the schools specializing in one-on-one tuition. These schools are not traditional, but they are perhaps the best place to nurse your pronunciation, because you will get lots of conversation practice as opposed to studying in traditional classes.

Though there are dozens of one-on-one schools around today and they’re almost all identical with exception of pricing and décor. Back when I started learning Thai in mid-2001, the best known were Somchart (www.somchart.com) and Thong Lor (http://www.geocities.com/thonglorthai/) one of the newer schools includes this one (www.thai-lessons.com).

If you want to stick with a traditional language school:

Because you arrive on Oct. 22nd, it’s too late to go to Unity, but you can go to TLA. They use the same materials as Union/Unity and they have classes starting on Oct 24th (http://www.tlaschool.com/)

You could do both private and classroom studies if you like, but that’s really intensive.

By the way, good luck in the marathon. Get lots of rest while in BKK. It's easy to get sick in the first month (sinus infections and the runs)

I can back Chai up here with regards the Thong Lor school as I went there a few years back. It is right next to the sky train, so is very convenient, and I think I paid 10,000 baht for 30 hours. It is one-on-one and very flexible; you can choose what time you want to have your lessons and how many hours a week. Also you get the choice of learning just spoken Thai or spoken and reading/writing. The tutors are very patient too, which was essential for my slow brain. And no, I'm not a shareholder.
