Hello Staytiger, you are now 10 days into your trip....I am planning the same trip but the other way around, I will hit the road anytime after Feb 2010, I have 3 months. Would love to see a posting from you from time to time to see what you are up to and where you have been.
My first mini road trip was to Kanchanaburi, stayed there for 5 days, many things to see there, will be going back, I stayed at a very nice, out of the way and quite guest house, if you are interested.
Good luck.

Just remember, there's nothing quite like the sound of an old V8 driving down the high way.
I owned several Holden Statesman when I lived in Oz. Great cars, they could pass anything on the road ....except a petrol station

Straytiger, thank you for taking the time to give some positive feedback. it is always good to know that others find the information here at the forum useful.
the Pai - Mae Hong Son - Mae Sariang - Mae Sot route looks relatively short on the map but it is a winding road - Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son takes almost 8 hours. I only did it by bus, I wouldn't dare to ride my motorcycle on that road. but it is definitely the most spectacular I have seen so far around here.
I am not into hiking either (couldn't be less of a hiker!) but there are always nice and easy walks to waterfalls etc.
I haven't been to Tak so I cannot give any advice on that.
also, I don't know anything about car rental.
thank you for the invitation. I am a very shy person - also very busy with my full-time job. if you have more questions, please ask them here, there are some people around who can recommend places and give practical tips.
if you go back to 2006 in Richard's road trip blogs here
http://www.thai-blogs.com/index.php/c16/?blog=5
you can find lots of places of interest in the north, not only Chiang Mai. (you'll need to go way back to page 5 and beyond to find the blogs from 2006 - sorry it wasn't clear.)
have fun planning your trip.

Have you bought a map book yet? That is always a good step to start planning your route. Before we can help you, we need to know how much time you have for this trip and what kind of places interest you.

you mean you have a month to drive from Chiang Mai to Bangkok and do some exploring underway?
Lampang, Sukhothai historical park, Tak - including Tilosu waterfall, the highest in Thailand, quite remote, Ayutthya come to my mind immediately. the usual stops.
if I could drive, and had so much time, I would surely do the Pai-Mae Hong Son- Mae Sot route and then continue to Tak.
it's just difficult to recommend things to someone I don't know.
what did you enjoy the most on previous visits - I mean places.

Hi Betti thank you for your response, ive read alot of your postings, and found them very informative again ty.Betti my wife and i have 28 days in thailand all up, we have alotted about 8 to 10 days based in chiang mai,to explore surrounding area mainly to the north east. Then plan to drive south ,we then have 2 to 4 days (depending on what we find out between now and then)to get to bkk.We are nearing 50 so hiking to remote areas wont be on our agenda We were in thailand for only a week previously in 2006 we enjoyed 3 days in bkk and 4 days in chiang mai (we loved chiang mai and is the main reason for our return)The Pai-Mai Hong Son-mae Sot route to Tak was on my mind ,and you have helped make it more solid. So we will most likely stay the night at Muang Tak. Id like to know what i might find near there be4 proceeding south? My wife and i would love to meet you in chiang mai to talk have coffee or a meal ( i understand time is not always easy to find )I know you have a wealth of information by your posting and we would love to tap into that. Look forward to seeing what you can do.Greg and Nina Johson
