the thaivisa forum (thaivisa dot com slash forum) has a large section on visa issues, with every possible scenario discussed. refer your friend to there - I think no point in trying to replicate information.

I don't know how the rules would apply to you if your wife is Thai. I found it relatively easy without a Thai wife since I met the age and income requirements. I first got a visitor visa to get into the country and openend an account with the bank of Bangkok. As I withdrew pension money several times each month with my US ATM card I deposited it at the Thai bank and withdrew it again to be able to show activity and get a letter from the bank. I also had copies of my annual pension notification. I needed a physical from the local hospital in Chiangmai and got a letter of recommendation from the US consulate. Once I had my 1 year retirement visa, it was easy to get it renewed at the Chiangmai immigration office. To leave the country for visits abroad I needed a special permit in my passport. All of that for a fee, of course.

We left Thailand after three years for personal reasons.

I believe the main difference if you have a Thai spouse is that the income requirements are about 50% less.

Also in addition to what you have mentioned you have to have a police report from your home country and the country you currently reside in if different.

I didn't have one. I wonder if they accepted the letter from the US consulate as a substitute. They actually had a form letter for that purpose.
