I would like some information on family life and child protection in Thailand. For instance under what circumstances would a child be given up for adoption? I suspect that it would be linked to poverty and death of parents. Are there many children in the orphanages? I have heard that there are many more boys than girls in orphanages. Is there a cultural reason for this? Is it commonly accepted for Thai people to adopt?

In all parts of the country, North, West, East, South, I have come across many small children. On inquiry, moms say - 'no, papa' - divorced, separated or father not known. I tell the mom -'Give him to me'. Mom says a firm 'no'. This probably is a social problem in the country.
I am still toying with the idea of adopting one of such children. |

Missionaries Exploit Akha Kids 560 Neglected Akha Children
Most volunteers who arrive there are immediately disgusted at the place and try to get out as soon as possible, with some volunteers even trying to return some of these children to their parents, where they will be better off. Why we watch missionaries by Akha.org? It is a profitable business to use children to get unsuspecting donors from overseas. donations |

The people to contact for any stats etc... is the Thailand Foundation for Children. Their website is mainly in Thai, but there are some English lanagues pages too. A list of some orphanges too:
http://www.ffc.or.th/eng/organization.php http://www.ffc.or.th/mbd/eng2008/ I checked the stats at another orphanage website (Thai language) no major difference between amount of girls and boys. In fact, their were more girls under their care.....than boys. According to what i have read, putting a child into an orphange is only considered after all other possibilties have been exhausted. Father Joe's Mercy Center in the slums of Klong Tery is home to children, the majority of whom have come from parents who are either in prison or/and addicted to drugs/alcohol and have no other relatives who want/are able to to raise them. The Moo Baan Dek website above simply states that many children have actually been abandoned there. Anyway, the next time your Thai girlfriend talks about going to make merit at a temple, advise making a visit/contribution to one of the orpahanges in the above website instead. |
