Well I personaly do not believe in, nor consult any psychics, palm readers, fortune tellers, star gazers, astrologers...etc.,..but if you are tempted by some of them to tell you your future, ask them to tell you your past first-as proof that they can actually, truthfuly foretell your future....For example ask them at what time you got up that morning & what you had for breakfast?

Once when I was walking down Khoa San Road I was pulled aside by a man in a turban who said he could tell me my future. He said he was a Yogi from India. Being sceptical yet curious I sat down with him to hear what he had to say. I was shocked actually. This man knew things, benign things that he couldn't possibly know. Stuff like my mothers birthdate, the number of siblings I have, my birthdate, the names of who i was in love with (at the time I was torn between 2 people). I never told him anything personal about me, he just started talking. After he told me all of what I just mentioned, he asked for money to tell my future. I got very leery of him at that point but my curiosity took over. I gave up about 2000 baht and he told me some interesting things, all but one of which has come true (the things that he predicted for this past year). I am wondering if anyone else has had this experience or has seen this man on Khoa San Road? I have returned many times but never saw him again.

The scammers choose their mark very carefully. They would first obtain personal information from various sources before "running into" their target. When they reveal our personal information to us, we will be very impressed with them. It comes as a surprise as we have never met the scammer before. However, we fail to comprehend the meticulous way they source for information.
The "yogi" incident reminds me of street magic. We are amazed by tricks which are done in the streets in broad daylight. This is because we assume there is no way for trickery to take place compared to a controlled setting eg. theatre. We will not think that the magician has been practising his tricks for umpteenth times so much so that he can literally pull wool over our eyes. It also does not help the mark when the magician/scammer has helpers/accomplices and other tools-of-the-trade. |

Yes, I know what you mean about trickery and obtaining personal information. It definitely seemed like he must have obtained information from somewhere, but where? The interesting thing to me is him knowing how many brothers and how many sisters I have as even I have trouble keeping track due to my father marrying several times and having children with each of his wives. There is no possible way that yogi could know such information. Also, I had literally just gotten to bangkok a couple of hours earlier so even on the off chance he obtained my personal information from the hotel I was staying at, it would've taken a LOT of research to know the exact count of my siblings. Anyway, that was just one example...there were several more. It was just a surreal experience.

My mom loves going for fortune tellers. Everytime she goes for one, she wouldn't forget to ask them about me. Funny thing is those guys wouldn't tell her the same things about me. LOL
When i was a highschool student, mom took me to see a monk, an old one in a remote area. He was pretty well known for fortune telling, mom said. The monk lived in a small hut in a ÇÑ´»èÒ area. First time he saw me, he tried to be a smart ass by saying he could tell that i didn't believe in fortune telling. He gave me a smile that got me pissed. So, i gave him a look to insult him on purpose. He gave me that kinda smile again then asked for my hand. He checked my palm and said i'd make a good doctor. LOL I burst out a lil laughter. lol He said it was ok for me not to believe him and also made sure i'd make a good doctor in the future. LOL I looked at mom and she seemed disappointed. lol As far as i know, she's never been there again. lol Why? At that time, my area of study was language and calcuating from which no one on earth in that area would make any doctor. lol It was just about the educational system in Thailand that time. lol Another fortune teller told my mom that i'd break up with my bf last year. lol One said my mom'd never have any grand children and i'd never get married. LOL One said i'd get married in 2 years (latest one lol). I know she's had hard times in her life and fortune telling may help her lessen those grieves but it's not a good feeling when she shares me what those guys tell her about me, esp bad things. lol I had a hard time going through all that fortune telling stuff on the year i lost my brother. My mom had worse time so she'd try any way with any fortune tellers to make sure me and my sis would stay safe and live long. I almost went nuts. lol She got both of us change our first names.. lol I liked the new name but i felt like i was losing my identity. I didn't complete the name changing process so it became no valid. I still have my orginal name. lol My sis is using a new one. lol I cannot help worrying about that habit of hers. lol It's taken a lot of her money already. lol |

Quote[/b] (Stacker @ Mar. 30 2005,23:11)]Yes there is, many people believe strongly in them, even more so than well...lol more so than the people that most American's make fun of. ![]() I went to Thailand when I was a little kid (I'm American of Thai descent) and the "psychic" told my dad that I will have two children someday. Actually, I do plan on having two children in the future (after I have my career and everything else).:-) Fingers crossed. ![]() |

Thank you for sharing, TD. Personally I have never believed fortune telling. A skilled teller has a lot of techniques to influence those who are naive. They often use cold reading (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_reading) to obtain information from us and rephrase it so that we believe they have some insight into our lives. They will make general statements and believers will buy the hits and ignore the misses. I would prefer to steer clear of them. ![]() As for my wifes prediction 50% isnt that bad ![]() |
