As far as how women are treated in Thailand, the whole culture needs an overhaul.
Subordination is a way of life here.
That would be true in the last generation or two. As Thailand becomes globalised and women become more educated, they are beginning to stand on their own two feet. The era of Sunthon Phu has long passed.

There will still be some who are submissive to their husband/boyfriend but a lot of women are now very independant compared to their parents' generation.

I can never watch more than two minutes of these soaps, I don't understand much at all but I understand the plot and the characters are awful

Basic story line of hit lakorn in Thailand.
1) Rich spoilt Thai man meets poor Thai village girl who hated him to core.
2) Rich spoilt Thai man vows to win over the heart of poor Thai village girl.
3) Along the way there are other women (usually evil ones) willingly offering themselves to the rich spoilt Thai man.
4) Poor village girl won't give in to the rich spoilt man.
5) Rich spoilt man rapes the poor village girl (sometimes more than 1 time).
6) Rich spoilt man regrets his actions and tried to win the poor village girl back.
7) Of cos along the way some evil men and women will try to stop him (or her). Expect to see a lot of bitch slapping and screaming.
8) Finally the rich (no longer spoilt because he prayed to buddha and asked for forgiveness) man won the heart of the poor village girl.
9) They both lived happily ever after in a big house with 10 cars (at least 1 ferrari) and 40 servants.
The End.
hahahaha, bucky seems to have watched quite a few of 'em?
Storylines are rather stagnant, the rich men always falls for a poor girl. -_-

No I don't watch Thai series. I do hear enough to know whats going on though because it seens like majority of Thais enjoy watching it.

I don't think crap TV is the only problem in Thailand. Law enforcers are also a big problem. Just how many times have you heard raped victims going to the police and were only advised they should settle with the aggressor privately? Most of the times it's settled after the accused paid the victim a certain agree amount of "compensation".

Just early this week I read crimes rate had gone up this year. An average of 14 females are raped everyday. Considering not all cases are reported. Kinda alarming isn't it.

There was a high profile rape case involving numerous guys that happened years ago in Phitsanulok. It was even made into a movie, คืนบาป พรหมพิราม. - http://th.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B8%...B8%B2%E0%B8%A1

I saw a lakorn along those lines (จำเลยรัก) where he also kidnapped her and turned her into a servant on his private island for some time. After release back on the mainland she never went to the police, even as he continued to harass her. Then he apologized to her mother, and they fell in love.

What is the problem is that parents take little interest, let alone participate, in activities with their children.
Most have no clue what exists online.

Default Consequence of Rape Scenes on Thai TV
TV producers in Thailand always defend their plots by saying that people know the difference between play acting and real life. But do they? And how do these plots influence the children who are forced to watch these soap operas with their parents because they live in a one room house.

Children enjoy sexual assault scenes on TVs: survey

A recent survey has revealed shocking findings: many children enjoy watching scenes of rapes on TV and they come to see sexual assaults as something common. "Some children even say they want to be like leading male characters in TV series so that they can rape a woman," Dr Noppadon Kannika said Tuesday as the head of the Assumption University's research centre, "This is worrying".

Conducted from April 24 to April 27, the survey covered 2,159 respondents in Bangkok and major cities. The respondent age starts from two years old up. According to the survey, raping scenes are the favourite among 21.1 per cent of children aged between 13 and 19 years old, 10.3 per cent of children aged between two and six years old and 6.4 per cent of those aged from seven to 12 years old.
They see nothing wrong with this as the lead male ends up marrying the woman he earlier raped and beat. We see this kind of action so often that it becomes the norm for children. They learn that Thai males are superior and that they canget away with beating their wife or girlfriend.

This is the consequence:

Thai boys rape girl after watching porn

Thai police arrested three boys who sexually assaulted a seven-year-old girl after watching pornography at an Internet café. The boys, aged between eight and 12, were arrested at a housing estate in the Thawee Watthana district on the western outskirts of Bangkok. The boys’ parents were taken for questioning, too. The victim's parents complained to police that their daughter was assaulted on April 17. They said their daughter was raped, and an examination confirms she has had sexual intercourse. Police are considering charges ranging from gang rape to taking a minor for a lewd act. Inspector Major Phuwadol Niamsri said the boys admitted to the acts and said they imitated what they saw on the Internet.
The common theme on Thai television of violence against women should be stopped now.

Getting tough on rape

THONGBAI THONGPAO
Bangkok Post
May 11, 2008

News of violence against women, mostly rapes, is rampant today. The crimes have been committed both by acquaintances of the victims as well as strangers, and have happened both in Bangkok and in the provinces.

Last month, a lecturer at a top Bangkok university asked a student to perform oral sex on him in exchange for a better grade.

Later, a Laotian male inmate in Lop Buri sought help when he was raped four times by a fellow prisoner. After investigating the complaint and finding it had grounds, the warden took the prisoner to report the incident to the police to prosecute the offender.

A few weeks earlier, a 34-year-old beautician in Bangkok was abducted by a man on her way home after work. He took her to a room to rape her but she faked compliance and bit off his tongue. The police later arrested the man.

Later, a Grade 6 pupil was attacked by a man in a bathroom of her school, which is located in the compound of a monastery in Nonthaburi. He forced her to perform oral sex, and she bit off his penis. After the police caught him, they took him to re-enact the crime at the scene, where he was injured by outrageous onlookers.

These are sexual crimes that happen in Thai society today. Judging from the frequencies of the crimes these days, the offenders may not have known that the laws related to sexual offences have been amended with much heavier penalties, ranging from longer jail terms to execution.

The amendment No.19 to the Penal Code, which took effect on July 31, 2007, revised Section 276 to read: "Anyone who rapes another person by threat in any form, by force to put the person in a position where he or she could not resist, or by leading him or her to mistake him or her as another person, is subject to a jail term from four to 20 years and a fine from 8,000 to 40,000 baht."

The description of the victim was changed from "a woman who is not his wife" in the original provision to "another person". The elimination of "a woman" aims to do away with the distinction between the sexes and protect boys or men as well. The phrase "who is not his wife" was scrapped by a popular request of women activists.

By the old definition, while a man might not rape other women, he could legally rape his wife, even when she is sick or not willing to have sex.

If the parties to a rape case are a man and wife who wish to remain married, the court is authorised to commute the penalty beyond what is prescribed by law as it sees fit. It may also impose conditions to control future behaviours instead of a penalty. In the event the court hands down a jail term and his/her spouse no longer wishes to stay married, he/she may inform his/her intention to the court who will then proceed to ask a prosecutor to file for a divorce on his/her behalf.

The amendment also marks another big step in widening protection. By using the unisex term of "another person", the law protects both males or a females.

This is especially helpful in child abuse cases where victims are boys. In the past, the offenders of boys were sometimes not prosecuted for lack of a legal framework and the most police could do was to prosecute offenders for lewd behaviour of which punishment was much lighter.

The interpretation of "rape" was also amended from "the forced penetration of a penis into a vagina" to "any act to achieve the sexual fulfilment of the offender against the will of the other person by using his/her sexual organ with the sexual organ, anus or mouth of the other person, or by using any other object with the sexual organ or anus of the other person".

As for the penalties, the amendment No.20, proclaimed on July 20, 2007 makes the penalties for sexual abuse heavier. If the victim is seriously injured during a rape, the penalty is a jail term from 15 to 20 years and a fine from 30,000 to 40,000 baht, or life imprisonment. If the victim dies as a result of the rape, the offender will be executed or face a life sentence.

If a weapon or explosives is used or the act is a gang rape which results in the death of the victim, the penalty is execution or life imprisonment.

These are what the laws prescribes. Since they took effect only a year ago, it remains to be seen whether they will deter crimes.

Prisonment already is hell for some people, encountering this must've traumatized that Laotian man all his life being a human-being. -_-'

sigh, so sad.
