Suggest you start by reading "Thailand A short History" by David K Wyatt published by Yale University Press, available via Amazon.
This gives good coverage of political events since 1932 and the establishment of democracy, as well as the history of the centuries before.
This book is generally considered one of, if not the best book, in the English language on Thailand's history.
Another book worth reading on the subject, in my humble opinion, is "A History of Thailand" by Chris Baker and Pasuk Phongpaichit :Cambridge University Press-available again via Amazon.

The book "Lonely Planet" does a brief but very informative prognosis.

Prognosis (older Greek πρόγνωσις, modern Greek πρόγνωση - literally fore-knowing, foreseeing) is a medical term denoting the doctor's prediction of how a patient's disease will progress, and whether there is chance of recovery. Since the 20th century, the word is being increasingly used in non-medical contexts as well, for example in corporate finance.
