my daughter is getting married in June to her Thai partner who has lived in the uk for over 20 years, although we are having a british ceremony I would like to incorporate something from Thailand into the reception, does anyone have any ideas what we could do? I know people normally give out favour gifts to the guests, and wondered if there was something thai we could give. I have also read that thai people believe that black should not been worn to a wedding as it brings bad luck, is this true? Any help would be much appreciated. jane

First welcome to the forums. and congratulations to your daughter. You might like to take a look at the blogs that Gor wrote for his wedding here in Thailand:
http://www.thailandlife.com/wedding/index.htm It might give you some ideas. But stay tuned, as I know we have some UK members who have Thai wives. They might be able to help with gift ideas you can buy in the UK. |

Well it is Thai tradition, to be paid a dowry for your daughter and for his family to pay for the cost of the wedding, when she gets married. How about 300,000 baht dowry, that would be considered a below average amount when a Thai man marries into a middle class Thai family, so hit the family for this dowry.
It is also Thai tradition to return the dowry, usually in the form of helping buy land or a house to the bride and groom, but instead you could use it to fly some Thai relatives in for the wedding ceremony. |

Welcome!
Wedding Etiquette and Black By chance i was asked exactly this a few days back by a western friend of mine going to a Thai wedding. It is all right to wear a black suit - no problems. But do attach a tash of colour to the suit such as a red/white handkerchief ie....it's not completely black. DO NOT however wear a black shirt! That is taboo in Thai wedding etiquette. Yes, in Thailand they do hand out gifts to the guests. At my wedding, which Richard and Gor attended we gave out bottle openers shaped as fish (something about Fish being lucky/prosperous, im not too sure). Any kind of cheap knick-nack will do. To add a bit of a Thai scheme to your wedding, howabout karaoke with Thai songs and karaoke transliteration in English at the bottom. Check out www.ethaimusic.com for an example. A Chinese buffet table would also be an excellent idea as a meal for the guests at the reception. Richard already printed the feed to Gor's wedding.
