My Ethnic art history teacher assigned us a presentation project in which we had to either present on something of our oun heritage (non western) or something that realted to something personal for us. I was reading a book for a seperate research project in another class when I learned of this ritual. The book was very vague and only showed a picture of the statue and that it was a custom in Thailand. This intrigued me because I am pregnant. I am always intrigued by other customs be especially those that relate to something current in my life.

I am doing a project in class and need some help.
I found in a book that women in Thailand purchase a statue of a women and child when she becomes pregnant and then throws it in a river once the baby is born. Can anyone tell me more about this. What is the reason, and does anyone have person stories or pictures of these statues? Thank you for your time |

For what sort of class does a 25-year-old person conduct research in this fashion? Just curious, because sources of information on the Internet can be dubious at times. There must be more authoritative sources available. Is there nothing in anthropological journals? From whence did you learn of this custom in the first place?
I personally have never heard of such a custom, but there are different regions in Thailand that have different customs. Perhaps someone can point you to some reliable literature on the topic. Here is a link that describes a Hindu ritual that sounds somewhat similar http://www.salwarkameezindia.com/fas...l-dussehra.htm Because Thai culture is heavily influenced by ancient Indian culture, perhaps some version remains in some parts of the country. |
