i opened a bank account with my fiance just 3 months ago with bangkok bank, no problem passport will do.
It is an interest bearing account due to the fact it is a joint account with a thai.
My account at another bank earns no interest due to the fact it is in my name alone.

Bangkok Bank and Farmers Bank allow foreigners to open accounts if they show their passport.

I think there is a yearly charge, but not very much about 100-200 Baht or so. But it also might depend on how much you have on your Account. But when you just send an amount for your holiday it sure isn`t very much.
But be sure that at least once a year you have some Movings on your Account, either you transfer money on it or get some money from ATM; otherwise (No Movings in one year) the Account will be cut. But the money isn`t lost really, you just have to open a new Account when you are in Thailand again.
I have 2 Accounts:

Siam Commercial Bank

Bangkok Bank

No Problems at all opening them, just show your Passport. At Siam Commercial Bank I even have Free Internet Banking.

i have an account at bangkok bank, which cost me 300 baht, only with the passport. there is no monthly fee on my account - in fact i still have the bank booklet and the atm card with about 12 baht on it i think i might just keep it until my next visit to thailand

however, you might want to take a thai friend with you when you open the account (and also if you want to do "complicated" transactions eg from farang account to thai account) because some of the people in the bank might let you wait for hours... just to tell you that you waited in the wrong queue, then she/he might give you some form you need to fill in... in thai
...or maybe your thai speaking/reading are good enough for this

...oh, i forgot: they might charge you 10 to 20 baht each time you use an atm machine, charges depending on whether you use "your" bank or any other bank, and it might also depend on the city you are in.

I'd opened my Bangkok Bank account just by showing my passport.

I have opened bank accounts in the past with Bangkok Bank, Siam Commercial Bank and also Krung Thai bank, all without work permits.
Keep in mind that this was 10 years ago, so things may have changed. Don't think you should have any problem opening one somewhere though.

Try Citibank
If you can't open a Thailand account,
see if you can ..on paper.. open the account in your home country and use the Thailand branches for your normal
banking services.

Officially you need a work permit, but I have heard reports of people being able to open a bank account with just a normal tourist visa. If one bank turns you down, then just go to the one next door!

You can open a Bank account with Bangkok Bank, you do not need a work permit all you need is your passport.I opened an account earlier this year,I have a passbook and an ATM card. The account I have is for people who live outside of Thailand and unfortunately pays no interest. As far as I know bangkok bank is the only bank which you can open an account officialy without a work permit.

if you go to the Bangkok Bank web site and click onto personal banking then foreign customers you will see that all is required by law to open a Non resident baht account is your passport. It also says you need to show evidence of where your money has come from but I was not asked for this.I think this is only for very large sums of money.
