I'm not sure if there's a minimum drinking age, but you need to be 18 to buy alcohol (in theory anyway). Bars and clubs in Bangkok nowadays tend to have a 20+ age limit.
Marijuana is not legal in Thailand, and if caught by the police you're liable to have to bribe them substantial amounts of money (if you're lucky) or face a extended stay in the Bangkok Hilton (if you're unlucky). Thailand has very harsh drug laws, and personally I can't see why anyone would bother risking it ![]() |

Thats a pretty tough question actually "What's the legal drinking age in Thailand?"
Actually most Farang probably wouldnt know that in their home country. In England it is illegal to give alcohol to an infant under the age of.. wait for it, 5 years of age so in theory you can have a bevvie before even going to school! I asked a couple of well-informed Thai friends earlier and they too were stumped! May look it up in Thai language on the Thai Law website.. Sure, the legal age to actually purchase alcohol is 18. As theyve been enforcing this law of late i asked a cop friend of mine just last month to the likes of "Ok, at a restaurant there are a bunch of 17 year old boys drinking but the person fitting the bill is 18, is that illegal? He said he wasn't sure himself! But the owner of the restaurant would be fined anyway he said as its difficult for the underage drinkers to prove that they hadnt given the 18 year-old the money beforehand! Yeah.. darned difficult to prove! To get into a bar/disco etc.. the law stands at 20. |

Quote[/b] ]Hes only 13. So I dont think it is was you all are saying, they never ask the age. Thats just from what I saw. In practice, sometimes parents just ask their kids to pop down the local shop to buy a pack of cigarette or couple of Beers with no problem. Sometimes the shopkeeper know them, and sometimes they just not bother and sell it anyway as they assume that the kids buying them for adults. ![]() |

The legal age for use of alcohol is 18 years. The shop who sell it will makes no problem about it, but when she/he walk outside and the police see it, you have a problem. The same is it with sigarettes, legal age is also 18 years.
About marihuana, don't think about it. Possession of 1 joint can give 10 years of prison! Possession of heroine death-penalty! XTC-pills, the same, not allowed. My brother in law was caught 2 years ago with 300 XTC-pills, now him stay in Bangkok Hilton for the duration of 25 years. His wife also, 25 years. Now he is 49, he will be an old man when he comes out of prison. Think what you do in Thailand, it is a beautiful country, but you have to listen the law. |
